That first line sure grabbed me, did it for you? I had to stop and just nod my head. I’d love to think that Jesus was coming soon. And then I remember all the people I know and love that don’t know Jesus yet, or if they do, they aren’t nurturing their relationship like Jesus deserves. So when you wonder why Jesus hasn’t come yet, remind yourself there are still people who need to know about him and be saved.
We’re a lot closer to Jesus’ return than Peter was when he wrote this letter. Thousands of years have already passed. In every generation, people have been getting ready. I don’t suppose any of those who love Jesus mind when they get to heaven. We have the confidence he’ll return when the Father says so. He promised. It’s our job to be ready.
How are we supposed to live as God’s chosen ones? We have to know and accept that people are watching us. Ask, “do I make a good representative of Christ?” An important message to cling to is — God chose YOU. And with that honor comes responsibility. Paul reminds us, “Since God chose you to be the holy people he loves, you must clothe yourselves with tenderhearted mercy, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.”
Don’t let this “must” scare you off. Rather, be thankful for the advice you have been given. Chances are pretty good that you are already seeking to live a life that reflects these things. The Holy Spirit living inside us will certainly help when our human frailty fails. I know I’m certainly thankful for the Holy Spirit!
The Holy Spirit is so generous! Not only are we gifted with special abilities to further the kingdom, we are drawn to Jesus, recognizing that he is Lord because of the Holy Spirit’s influence in our lives. The gifts we are given are designed especially for us. “There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord.”
When we realize how we have been gifted, we can use our gifts to serve God and others in our kingdom fellowship. It’s usually not too hard to figure out how we’ve been gifted. Start by looking at what you are good at or what gives you joy when you do it. What are some of those things for you? Are you using them to help build up God’s kingdom?
Isn’t it exciting to know that having the Holy Spirit take up residence in you has some added perks? This is the perfect reading to touch on some of the special abilities we have access to through the Holy Spirit. This doesn’t mean we’ll see all these things manifested in our lives. “God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us.” That’s the truth we need to hold on to.
When you read this list, did you recognize a Spiritual gift you may have been given? If not, no worries because there are other lists in the Bible. Each of our gifts and abilities may be different, but perfectly chosen by God for his purpose.
