The Holy Spirit is so generous! Not only are we gifted with special abilities to further the kingdom, we are drawn to Jesus, recognizing that he is Lord because of the Holy Spirit’s influence in our lives. The gifts we are given are designed especially for us. “There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord.”
When we realize how we have been gifted, we can use our gifts to serve God and others in our kingdom fellowship. It’s usually not too hard to figure out how we’ve been gifted. Start by looking at what you are good at or what gives you joy when you do it. What are some of those things for you? Are you using them to help build up God’s kingdom?
Paul gives us a bit of a list here of the different spiritual gifts we may have been given. This is certainly not an all-inclusive list. Other examples are found elsewhere in the Bible. All of these abilities are wonderful. I’ve seen many of them in play when fellow Christ-followers are doing their “thing.”
Sometimes we find ourselves wishing for certain gifts, but they aren’t revealed in our lives. When I first met the Holy Spirit, I was hoping to be able to speak in tongues like my best friend was. I was confident that was the “best” gift of all. I have learned over the years there is no “best” gift, generally speaking. But there is a “best” gift chosen just for you (and me)! I am beyond grateful for how God uses me with the gifts he has given.
Why are we given gifts? Other than the fact we have a generous and loving God, there is a reason. Paul says, “A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.” In other translations of verse 7, we see we are given gifts for the “common good,” “for helping the entire church.” The Message paraphrase has a unique way of looking at this. “Each person is given something to do that shows who God is: Everyone gets in on it, everyone benefits.” I like that. Our gifts reveal Jesus to others. The Holy Spirit inside us makes it so!
How has God gifted you? Have you left your package unopened or unused? I’d love to hear how you’re using your gifts for others. Be sure to connect over on the Devotions on the Go! Facebook group and look for the Spiritual Gifts post. (https://www.facebook.com/groups/ReflectionsDevo) We’ll help you discover yours if you’re still not sure.
As with any gift, it’s meant to be opened. Think of all the people who are missing out on being drawn the Father when you use your gift. And, if you’re like me, when you use your gift, you get a surge of joy and fulfillment.
Let’s pray …
Father God, thank you for how you have gifted me. Forgive me for taking so long to recognize the mission you wanted for me. Help me to use my gifts to honor you and draw others closer to you. I love the feeling you give me as a bonus when I use my gifts. Thank you for your generosity and grace! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
