James 1:19-27 – Don’t Just Listen, Do!

Read James 1:19-27

Here’s yet another source, Jesus’ little brother James, teaching us the importance of God’s Word. James was a Christian leader, supporting his brother’s mission in the early Jerusalem church. His message here is clear that God’s Word is to be trusted and followed.

James put an exclamation point on how we should read the Bible. By that, I mean that rather than just read the words and agree that they are nice and well-intentioned, we are to live them and act on them. Simply going through the motions of life doesn’t count.

What great wisdom! When we live out the truth found in Scripture, we can avoid so many missteps we would otherwise have made. We can focus on loving God and loving others. What does that type of kindness look like for you?

If you don’t know what God is calling you to do, continue to listen, read the Bible, and engage with other believers. Surrounding yourself with people who walk the same path can only strengthen you, help you from going the wrong direction. It’s way too easy to fall into the trap of sin, even for seasoned believers! We all need each other.

James also calls out anger and how powerfully we can be overcome. We need to be on guard, knowing that challenges will come. How we handle those moments of testing says a lot. Do we blow up and throw a tantrum or do we quietly seek refuge in God? James says to “humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts.” Allowing God to plant His word there has so many benefits. James says it has the “power to save your souls.”

James points to a fault many of us struggle with, and that’s controlling our tongue. Our words can be sharp like piercing daggers if used in anger or out of turn. It’s helpful if we remember to speak to others as we want to be spoken to.

We’ve been warned that the world seeks to corrupt us believers. James counsels us to get rid of the filth in our lives and “humbly” accept God’s direction. Take some time today to reflect on what areas of your life may need to be eliminated so you can focus more on living out your faith as God deserves.

Surround me with like-minded people who will walk this faith journey with me. Keep inspiring me to do my best each day. Help me to control any anger and sinful tendencies. Use me to work out your kingdom purposes here on earth. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
