“He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” (Revelation 21:4)

God will one day do all these wonderful things. Such a tender and loving God we have! Can you imagine a world where death is no more, and sorrow and pain are gone forever? It is certainly a comforting thought to look forward to.

Context (Revelation 21:1-7): Our memory verse is part of how John describes the New Jerusalem, which will one day become the new reality for believers. This verse gives us hope to cling to in the dark times that will precede the day our tears are gone. We can imagine the place where we will live with God forever. That is a promise yet to be fulfilled, and people have been anxiously waiting for centuries.

How do you feel when you read our verse of the day? For those struggling with debilitating disease, financial ruin, or grief, this verse has even more impact. Even when life is humming along nicely, knowing that there is a greater future in store can make life even sweeter.

God revealed this vision to John, so he’d share it with us. Thankfully, John understood the importance of this promise and didn’t keep the fantastic news to himself. John may not have fully understood what he was seeing in the visions he recorded in the Book of Revelation. What a privilege to see this new heaven and new earth!

There are plenty of Bible texts that speak of the end times preceding the promise. How all the catastrophes fit together is really a mystery. Suffice it to say that there will be great suffering before our tears are wiped away. There will be much to endure, and I pray every day for the strength to stay strong.

This verse is not meant to cause us to dwell on our failures but to rejoice in God’s provision. No matter how we suffer in this world, we have the assurance that all that sadness, hurt, and fear will one day be washed away forever.

It’s tempting to want to rush that joyful day into existence. But we have been given the privilege of serving God in this world before that day comes. We have the opportunity to be a light in the darkness, inviting others to hear this great promise. Singing praise to God and serving him with the gifts he’s given is our mission for the here and now. Take time to honor God today.

little boy praying with eyes closedLet’s pray. Lord, the more I get to know you, the more I look forward to the day when all tears are gone and problems erased. You have given us such a great promise to cling to in these challenging times. Help me to stand firm on the truth of your word, even when it’s not popular. Protect me from the influence of evil and shine through me so others can be safe as well. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
