Read Acts 7:1-36

Stephen brilliantly builds rapport with his audience. I can only imagine how nervous he would have been, and how easily it would be to go on the defensive after being arrested. The history Stephen shares here is a common bond, as these men all share a common ancestral heritage. These hero stories have been passed down for generations. Hearing them never gets old.

Did you notice Stephen had evaded the question? Or did he? The false accusations brought against Stephen included, “We heard him blaspheme Moses, and even God.” Stephen’s answer more than covered Moses’ life. It was clear that Stephen was not trying to change or abuse anything. Stephen told the story just right.

So why would people lie about such a thing and try to discredit Stephen? Were they jealous because of how holy he was? Maybe they didn’t like that he had been chosen as one of the seven new leaders of the church. It’s hard to know what motivates people to slander others and make up stories that are untrue.

Stephen knew exactly what to do to plead his case. He needed to go into storyteller mode. People love stories. What is your favorite part of the Israelite history that he spoke about that day? If this was the first time you ever heard some of those stories, you should read the Book of Genesis sometime. Moses records such great history in that book.

Our reading today is only the first part of the story Stephen shares. We’ll have the second part coming up next. For now, cherish the memories that Stephen shares. As Jesus’ followers, his Jewish roots become ours, and these stories are a lot more meaningful to us.

Do you have a favorite Bible hero that Stephen mentions? What resonates with you? While Stephen didn’t go into a lot of detail, Joseph’s story always touches me. He was always faithful, despite the hard situations he found himself in. God used him in mighty ways, even though his brothers had plotted to kill him and eventually sold him to a traveling band of traders.

Focus today on how God is using you in mighty ways. Thank Him for all the opportunities he provides along with the strength to follow.

folded hands laying on top of what appears to be a BibleLet’s pray. Lord, I am inspired by how Stephen stood up and boldly spoke of the history that bound him to you and his oppressors. The Holy Spirit was surely at work in those moments. Thank you for working in my life so I can be your mouthpiece to the world. Open my eyes to see you and follow you so that I never miss an opportunity to share about you with those who need to hear your message. I am your servant, Lord. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
