Psalm 119:11 – Hide It!

“I have hidden your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.”
(Psalm 119:11)

This verse sums up precisely why I often reflect on one verse at a time. It is easier to memorize or “hide” God’s word in our hearts when it’s in smaller chunks. When we can associate a given situation with a verse, it helps us to recall when those situations arise.

Context (Psalm 119:9-16): This is only a small excerpt from the longest chapter in the Bible. This psalm’s central theme is the importance of God’s word. The psalmist knows our lives depend on our obedience to the truths of Scripture. Other descriptors for God’s word include decrees, regulations, commandments, and laws. The whole psalm follows this pattern of singing the praises of God’s instruction book for us.

I always love it when people discover the Bible for the first time. I’ve often heard them marvel that such great wisdom seems to be hidden to the world. That’s because the world isn’t cracking open the pages of Scripture, much less reading and being enlightened.

We can never outgrow the delight and awe we feel when encountering God in his word. It is a treasure to be sure. The fact that it is also contains laws and regulations can be a comfort in that we don’t have to guess what pleases and displeases God. Jesus may have come to fulfill those laws, but in my mind that doesn’t make them obsolete or breakable.

When we are mindful of what God’s word says, to the point of hiding the truth in our hearts, we are armed. Not only are we ready to face whatever trial may come our way because we’ll have words of comfort or encouragement, but we’ll have the assurance that Jesus has gone before us and the victory is won. It is hard to describe how this comfort sustains in even difficult times.

We know much from the promises in Scripture. If God made promises that have been fulfilled at least once, we know he is faithful for the promises yet to be realized. We can rest in expectant hope because God is trustworthy.

What are some of the hidden gems in your heart? Reflect on those and how they bring you strength for life.

single cross against sunset with sun burst by crossLet’s pray. Father God, I cannot fully express how grateful I am for your word and how it helps me know you more. I may not understand why things happen in this life, but I do not have to fear because you are near. Your promised return is always on my mind; may I live to see the day. Help me stay close to you and hide your word deep inside. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
