Today’s reading was a bit perplexing to me. John knew who Jesus was. Or so I thought. They were related. So why was John sending his folks to Jesus to ask if he was the Messiah they had been waiting for?
John had spent his life in the wilderness, following God’s plan for him to prepare the way for the Messiah (for Jesus). It seems odd to me that he had to ask. Perhaps he was hearing stories about Jesus that weren’t entirely accurate. Maybe he had doubts and had to be sure.
We all have some doubts, don’t we? We expect God to act one way and then he doesn’t, so we begin to doubt or question. Or perhaps we hear something from a non-believer we are unable to refute, and so doubt starts creeping in. We see disasters and unfairness in our world, and we question how God can allow it.
I heard from our pastor just yesterday that society, in general, is trending toward non-belief in God all together. Further, that the Bible is just a myth. A myth. Now that’s some serious doubting. He went on to share about the miracles he’s seen with his own eyes. It reminds me of what Jesus is telling John’s disciples here. God is most certainly alive and well.
Do we need to be reminded that God is real? If God is real, then his word is real. We can depend on both! Doubts will come, but we need to stand strong. The evil one will use many tactics to throw us off course. Remember Jesus’ words, “God blesses those who do not fall away because of me.”
I also like how Jesus affirmed John and John’s ministry. It is good for us to surround ourselves with people who are living their lives for God’s purposes. It can often help us see our own mission and the plan God has for us. It is also good practice for us to edify our friends and business partners to others. Goodwill in community is built on strong relationships. Relationships are strongest when there is support and understanding.
Jesus was a bit perplexed by the teachers of the law then. Can you imagine what he thinks about so many walking around today? Of course, having God in their midst and still not seeing is quite a bit different than believing in something you cannot see. Nonetheless, we often overlook the obvious. We need to be on the lookout for God because he does show up. He is standing ready now to move in and through us.
Are you prepared to be used by God? Remember Jesus’ words, “But wisdom is shown to be right by the lives of those who follow it.”
Let’s pray. Father God. I sometimes feel like I just go through the motions. Yet, at the same time, my time spent with you is precious and leaves me hungry for more. I am saddened by the way the world seems to ignore you and belittle you. Times haven’t changed much, have they? Forgive my sinful heart when I slip into my habit of wanting to be in control. Work through me for what you want. I see a vision of my future where we are making a great difference together. Please take me through the steps it will take to get there. Thank you for your guidance and the wisdom you give as I follow you. Use me to help others find their way back to you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
