Read Daniel 5:13-31
God’s “graffiti” had a somber meaning for King Belshazzar. Despite the message, and Daniel’s own request, the king bestowed the gifts of honor to Daniel for deciphering the message. Who knew that the “numbered days” of the king’s reign would run out so soon!
King Belshazzar was not given the opportunity to correct his ways. He had angered God past the point of return. God’s sovereign power is again revealed to individuals outside the land of Israel. This pagan king, however, did not find favor with God as his predecessor had.
Daniel retells of Nebuchadnezzar’s fate and how the Most High God intervened. It is suggested this account should not come as any surprise to Belshazzar. What surprises Daniel is that Belshazzar could so blatantly ignore the lessons Nebuchadnezzar learned from his own arrogant behavior. Belshazzar’s decision to use the sacred vessels to toast false gods is revolting and highly disrespectful to God.
Scholars and historians have reported that Nebuchadnezzar did not have a son named Belshazzar, and that Darius the Mede may not be a historical figure. While the cast of characters in this story are a bit suspect, the message we can take away is that God is always in control. God sees the nasty things done by all people and responds accordingly.
We’re just as guilty, aren’t we? We can read about the history of God’s people, their rebellion against God, and somehow believe that doesn’t apply to us. Why should we be any different? Why should our sins be overlooked? What bothers God hasn’t changed.
The difference for us is the promise of salvation Jesus brings for those who love and trust him. Our behavior still counts. God’s grace is available to all who believe. There is a surprise ending for us, as well. Jesus’ died to save us while we were stuck in our sin. Romans 5:8 reads, “But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”
How does the intention of this passage from Daniel change the way you respond to God’s grace and mercy? How does the fact that God is in control make you feel?
Let’s pray. Lord, thank you for how you have woven together examples of your truth in Scripture. Whether these events happened or not, your message is clear. You want me to pay attention to you, accept your gifts and guidance, and tell others about how you are moving in my life. Help me do a better job of all of that. Forgive me for my imperfections. I am honored to be a living part of your story. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
