John 1:1-18 – The Eternal Word

Word of God open with lights beaming and cross with lights behind

Read John 1:1-18

Here’s an exercise to try. Reread this text, verses 1-5 and 14, but replace the word “Word” with “Jesus.” You now have an entirely different, richer picture of who Jesus really is. Jesus was very much part of creation, and all that exists can be eternally grateful. As the “Word,” Jesus represents all truth, including the Word of God.

What goes through your mind when you realize that Jesus is not only our Savior but our Creator? God wasn’t about to create something so precious only to see it destroyed by sin. God knew we would stumble and be lost without Him. How the heart of God must break when so many people disregard Jesus’ involvement in their lives! When is the last time you thanked God for creating you or something you encounter each day? Even as believers, we get a bit lax when it comes to our gratitude because we start to take God for granted.

Jesus is also described here as the light “coming into the world.” Jesus didn’t keep that light to himself but “gives light to everyone.” Sadly, not everyone will receive the light. In fact, many run from it, happy to live in darkness, chasing dreams and happiness in all the wrong places.

Those people don’t recognize Jesus for who he is. Those in darkness miss out on the beautiful life Jesus hopes for each of us when we believe and accept Him. From my experience, a life living in the light with Jesus is so much richer and fulfilling than the alternative.

Don’t you love how God sent a messenger to prepare the way for Jesus? That man, John the Baptist, is a different John from the author of this book. Our text speaks of the baptizer as the one who came before to tell people about Jesus. It was John’s job to ready the people’s hearts to receive the salvation Jesus would bring. Still, many remained lost.

Aren’t you glad that you have accepted the light? “From his abundance we have all received one gracious blessing after another.” Because of Jesus, we have access to God’s unfailing love and faithfulness. Reflect on the abundance of God today and all the blessings he has brought into your life.

hands folded over a bible with the words Let Us Pray for eachotherLet’s pray. Father, thank you for revealing this side of your character. Protect me from the darkness that looms in this world, waiting to pounce and overtake me. Thank you for your mercy and grace. I believe in you and have accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior. What an honor and a privilege it is to be your child receiving each and every blessing directly from you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
