1 Peter 4:12-19 – Doom and Bloom

Read 1 Peter 4:12-19

I assume Peter is talking about Jesus’ glorious return and our everlasting life with him when he describes, “seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world.” But I got a little glimpse of that “glory” this week. Anytime we see God move in our midst or help us in our struggles, we get a peek into the glory of God.

We know the joy that bubbles up inside us when we see God’s hand at work in our lives or community. Peter encourages us to persevere despite the unpleasant situations we face in life. It really resonated with me in a fresh way when I read Peter’s words, “for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering.” Take a moment to let that truth sink in. Partners with Christ. Partners.

When we encounter those challenges we’ve been warned about (the doom), we are assured that we will not be alone and that we’ll come out on the other side stronger having trusted God (the bloom). This wisdom will help you navigate the “doom” knowing that God has planted you with all the nutrients you need to make it through and begin to bloom in that season.

As Christians, we “bear the name of Christ” plain as day. That can offend other people who don’t understand the life-giving peace and freedom we get directly from the Creator of all things. Isn’t it fantastic we can have the Holy Spirit’s power to help deflect those arrows of evil?

Peter says in verse 16, “Praise God for the privilege of being called by his name!” It is a privilege to have a relationship with God. So many people these days like to give the “universe” credit for this or that. I just shake my head as I sadly realize they don’t know you can go a step beyond and actually have a conversation with the creator of that beloved universe! If that isn’t a privilege, I don’t know what is.

Peter’s discussion on judgment shows us that we are not shielded from the scrutiny of God’s judgment just because we’re Christians. Our hope is based on faith in Jesus and the promise of being clothed in his righteousness.

Have you acknowledged God’s intention to help you “bloom”?

Suffering because of our sinfulness doesn’t count. Peter closes this section by clarifying that: “So if you are suffering in a manner that pleases God, keep on doing what is right, and trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you.” Obeying the Good News, which means boldly professing your allegiance to Jesus, is what pleases God. When we suffer for that, he comes to our rescue. How does that make you feel?

Let’s pray. Lord, I am overcome with awe and admiration for you and how you have designed me to desire you. I want to please you in all I say and do. Forgive me for the times I fall short of that. Help me not to care what other people say about me. I’m delighted to be your child and want others to know you, too. Use me to bring others into a relationship with you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
