Proverbs 24:17-34 – Do This

Read Proverbs 24:17-34

We’re seeing a lot of the same wisdom being repeated over and over. Some of these themes are don’t seek revenge, fear the Lord, don’t be lazy, and don’t associate with rebels. These are all good reminders. I much prefer the “do this” examples of wisdom. After all, when we are told “not” to do something, aren’t we more inclined to want to do it? I can just picture someone saying, “don’t look now, but…” What happens? The other person will undoubtedly look!

So, the verse I’d like to focus on today is a “do this” instance. “Do your planning and prepare your fields before building your house.” We are not currently planning to build a house, but here in Mexico that would certainly be a possibility. We would definitely need to plan well, which would include finding a contractor with a good reputation and work ethic. I see this nugget of wisdom as reminding us of the importance of preparation. We shouldn’t rush to have something we aren’t ready for.

2 Peter 3:1-13 – The Lord is Coming

Read 2 Peter 3:1-13

If Jesus announced he was coming to your house today -what would your first thought be? Would it be, “Oh, no! The refrigerator is empty and there is nothing to serve him?” Would it be you couldn’t remember if you’d made the bed or taken out the trash? Are we ready to invite Jesus into our messy lives? Don’t you think he already knows how we live?

Today’s reading reminds us that Jesus is coming again, just like he said. It’s not our place to question when, because “the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief.”  Once we are able to stop worrying about the “when” we can begin to put all of our focus on being ready. God is being patient because he doesn’t want anyone to be destroyed and wants everyone to repent.

1 Peter 4:7-11 – End Times

Read 1 Peter 4:7-11

People have been talking about end times for centuries. Even here in our passage today we see, “the end of the world is coming soon.” Over the years, there have been those who have tried to crack the code to figure out when it is actually going to happen. There are some who have been so sure they knew, they based their whole life on being prepared. Then the time came and went without incident. The sun rose and set once again. Life goes on.

The Bible tells us only God knows when. Yet, we know the end is coming, it always has been. What do we do about it? Live expectantly. We should be living our life, preparing for something greater. Whether we see the end of the age during our lifetime or not, we can have the assurance that a much better future awaits us. We can be living and preparing now.  Continue reading “1 Peter 4:7-11 – End Times”
