1 Peter 4:7-11 – End Times

Read 1 Peter 4:7-11

People have been talking about end times for centuries. Even here in our passage today we see, “the end of the world is coming soon.” Over the years, there have been those who have tried to crack the code to figure out when it is actually going to happen. There are some who have been so sure they knew, they based their whole life on being prepared. Then the time came and went without incident. The sun rose and set once again. Life goes on.

The Bible tells us only God knows when. Yet, we know the end is coming, it always has been. What do we do about it? Live expectantly. We should be living our life, preparing for something greater. Whether we see the end of the age during our lifetime or not, we can have the assurance that a much better future awaits us. We can be living and preparing now.

So how do we prepare? Today’s passage gives us some clues. Love one another. Pray with certainty that we are being heard. Use the gifts we’ve been given to serve others. Cheerfully share what we have.

You’ve probably heard this before, “love covers a multitude of sins.” We see this in our passage today, and in context, it takes on a little stronger meaning.  We’re not just using love lightly to mask an error or omission, like a forgotten birthday or appointment. Love should be deep and meaningful. When we truly love others, as God loves them, we can make a difference. Love is powerful.

I’ve also heard people say they’re living each day to the fullest as if it was their last. Again, there is wisdom here in that we don’t know how long we will live. If we waste a day or even just a minute, that is time we can never get back. Don’t we want to spend our lives doing things that please God? Why is that idea so foreign to some? Again, many look to selfish gain and indulge their own desires. I’m not saying that is bad, but I almost feel like that is secondary to helping and serving others. Many times, the act of service will be the reward we can take away from those moments.

The whole balancing act of life can be what really limits us. We spend so much time worrying about things. What is it that has you a bit worried these days? Chances are it’s something close to you, maybe even a personal struggle. It’s not as likely that your worries revolve around people across town or on the other side of the globe. There are enough worries close to home. Stop worrying. That isn’t one of the activities we read about today in getting ourselves ready.

Let’s pray. Father God, I want to be ready when you come again. When the world comes to an end, I want to be right there with you helping to welcome all those who have accepted your gift and have prepared well. What a glorious day that will be. Until then, Lord, help me to use the gifts you have given me. Bless the ministries I am leading so that you shine through. I don’t want to be the focus, but I want to draw all the attention to you. I give you all glory, honor, and praise. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
