John 19:17-42 – Dead and Buried

Read John 19:17-42

There are so many key individuals involved in Jesus’ death and burial. In addition to Pilate and the leading priests who squabbled over the charges, there were the soldiers, Jesus’ faithful women followers, the disciple Jesus loved, Joseph of Arimathea, and Nicodemus. Each one was used by God to play a role in how Jesus’ mission on earth ended.

It’s also amazing to see how Jesus, in his agony after being beaten and carrying his own heavy cross, was still fulfilling prophecy to the bitter end. He also connected his mother with his dear disciple, establishing a means of care for her. In his final moments, Jesus was still caring for his loved ones. Mark 15:21-47 – Jesus’ Final Hours

It seems almost surreal to be reading about Jesus’ final hours when Christmas lights are already twinkling in houses around the neighborhood. However, it never goes out of style to remember and celebrate God’s love and how it was displayed as Jesus was nailed to the cross, died, and was buried.

Mark’s account of these events focuses on some interesting elements involving some unlikely characters. We see Simon, a passerby, a Roman guard, and Joseph, a member of the high council. Mark 15:42-47 – Put to Rest

Read Mark 15:42-47

What surprised you in today’s reading? Perhaps it was that a respected member of the high council wanted Jesus’ body. What moved Joseph to take this risk? Mark’s gospel speaks of the linen, the location, and those witnessing Jesus’ resting place.

As a child, I remember reciting the “Apostle’s Creed,” and we proclaimed every week that Jesus was buried. It happened that way. But Jesus’ was not a normal burial. This was the entombment of God’s only son.
