Leviticus 17:1-16 – Life is in the Blood

Read Leviticus 17:1-16

Don’t drink blood–we’re not vampires! We know vampires aren’t real, but who else would be a fan of a blood cocktail? God’s intention here is to caution us from consuming something we shouldn’t. Our passage repeats the reason for refraining from ingesting blood, which is, the life is in the blood.

Of note, these regulations call out all native Israelites and foreigners living among them. This is a rule included in the Old Covenant. The restrictions set out here are not simply a suggestion either, are they? If someone ignores this counsel, they will be removed, “cut off from the community.” God’s message is to be taken seriously. Can you imagine being removed from everything you have ever known? 2 Chronicles 34:14-33 – What a Find!

Read 2 Chronicles 34:14-33

There is so much we can glean from today’s passage, which is very similar to King Josiah’s history in 2 Kings 22. The key piece fueling this story is that a scroll containing God’s law, originally given by God to Moses, has been found. The king is overcome with the news, especially when he has heard the contents of the scroll.

King Josiah humbly acknowledges, seeks God, obeys God, leads others to return to God. He does all these things despite the fact he knows God’s anger is still burning under the surface, promising to bring judgment after Josiah’s lifetime. Colossians 2:16-23 – Whose Rules?

Read Colossians 2:16-23

Have you ever lamented over all the rules you have to follow? There are best etiquette techniques involving place settings, curfews, and speed limits, to name a few. Then we can look spiritually and never forget the 10 Commandments or the rest of the law God gave Moses in the book of Deuteronomy. While the world’s rules can limit us and direct us, God’s rules empower us for service and loving others.

We’re not to be condemned for living the way God desires. Paul says it plain as day. He also alludes to the fact that Jesus radically changed the rules. For Gentiles not familiar with the ways of the Jews and the rich history of being in relationship with God, this was terrific news. They didn’t have to worry about a lot of ritualistic behaviors. There is freedom in Jesus for everyone!
