Colossians 1:15-20 – Jesus is Supreme

Read Colossians 1:15-20

This reading concludes our focus on who Jesus is. How fitting that it would focus on the supremacy of Jesus. According to Webster’s Thesaurus, “supreme” is an adjective describing someone or something as chief in command or of highest importance. Jesus is the sovereign, greatest, and utmost of all things.

These verses affirm who Jesus is. Jesus reveals God to us. We can see the God of the universe simply by looking at Jesus’ life. “Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.” God doesn’t have to seem so distant and uninvolved. Everything we already know about God we can say about Jesus. They are one and want to be known by us. Continue reading “Colossians 1:15-20 – Jesus is Supreme”

John 1:1-18 – The Eternal Word

Read John 1:1-18

Here’s an exercise to try. Reread this text, verses 1-5 and 14, but replace the word “Word” with “Jesus.” You now have an entirely different, richer picture of who Jesus really is. Jesus was very much part of creation, and all that exists can be eternally grateful. As the “Word,” Jesus represents all truth, including the Word of God.

What goes through your mind when you realize that Jesus is not only our Savior but our Creator? God wasn’t about to create something so precious only to see it destroyed by sin. God knew we would stumble and be lost without Him. How the heart of God must break when so many people disregard Jesus’ involvement in their lives! When is the last time you thanked God for creating you or something you encounter each day? Even as believers, we get a bit lax when it comes to our gratitude because we start to take God for granted. Continue reading “John 1:1-18 – The Eternal Word”

Hebrews 1:1-4 – God’s Son

Read Hebrews 1:1-4

Revealing Jesus’ identity as the Son of God, in the opening verses of Hebrews, would have been shocking to his fellow Jews. The book of Hebrews was written as encouragement to Jewish converts to Christianity in the early church. They would have been facing many challenges to stay true and not fall back into their comfortable Jewish traditions.

The same counsel that helped those Jewish Christians can help us today navigate all the mixed messages we encounter in this world. Jesus is God’s Son. Period. Jesus was many things, but being the Son of God was the highest honor and speaks volumes of Jesus’ identity. Continue reading “Hebrews 1:1-4 – God’s Son”

Philippians 2:1-11 – Jesus’ Attitude

Read Philippians 2:1-11

You can learn a lot about a person by observing their attitude and how they approach life. We tend to be drawn to those with a positive attitude, rather than those pessimistic, doom-and-gloom types. The apostle Paul describes Jesus’ attitude and challenges us to be more like Jesus.

We will always fall short, but it’s our attempts that matter. Paul gives us some clues to help us navigate life. We are to be tender, compassionate, and loving. We are to be humble and selfless. To disregard Paul’s counsel would result in very unattractive behavior. When you think of your actions and intentions over the past week, have you exhibited any of the positive qualities Paul suggests? What needs to change in your life to be more like Jesus?

Getting to know Jesus and how he relates to those he loves is a great place to start on our journey. Jesus wasn’t full of pride. Jesus didn’t force himself on others but encouraged unity of purpose. It makes sense that we can find support in the presence of other believers. We share the common purpose of loving God back and showing our gratitude for all that we have been given.

Jesus’ humility once again strikes me. A person with his power and connections could easily have been a tyrant, but Jesus never abused his power. He was able to set aside his majesty and “gave up his divine privileges” to embrace the human experience. That speaks volumes about Jesus’ character.

Jesus’ attitude pleased God, and He “gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow.” Jesus’ place of honor allows us access to the Father. Can you just imagine the place where everyone is bowing to Jesus? There is yet another picture we can cherish of who Jesus is. He is the one we worship.

What is our part other than trying to be more like Jesus? We need to bow and, as Paul said, every tongue should “declare that Jesus Christ is Lord.” What does it mean that Jesus is Lord? It means Jesus has ultimate power and control over all things. We trust Jesus to be our all in all. The more you get to know Jesus, the more you want to declare how he is showing up in your life.

Take time to worship Jesus today. Here’s a medley of worship songs to listen to, full of praise to our majestic Jesus as performed by Chris Tomlin, Brooke Ligertwood, Tyasta Pangalila, and Phil Wickham.

little boy praying with eyes closedLet’s pray. Father, thank you for sending Jesus into the world to show us how to have a God-pleasing attitude. Continue to build my character to be more like Christ. May I do my best today to reflect you in an honoring way. I want my life and actions to bring you glory.  May I open my mouth to give you praise. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Isaiah 52:13-53:12 – What He Endured for Us

Read Isaiah 52:13-53:12

Jesus knew suffering firsthand, up close and personal, and in a most dreadful, horrific way. We may often feel alone in our own struggles, but knowing Jesus is familiar with our pain can be comforting. This passage can be shocking to read, especially the first time. To know that what Jesus endured for us was foretold by the prophet, Isaiah, is such a powerful revelation, isn’t it?

So far during our Discovering the Bible Together Challenge, we’ve met Jesus as our Messiah and Servant King. Now we know him for his sacrificial suffering. What love! How does that make you feel to realize all Jesus has done for you? Continue reading “Isaiah 52:13-53:12 – What He Endured for Us”
