1 John 1:5-10 – Confess It!

Read 1 John 1:5-10

Here again, we see the recurring theme of darkness versus light. Because of our sinful nature as humans, we are always going to have a toe dipped into darkness. Only God is completely light. We can’t appreciate our salvation and forgiveness of sins without acknowledging that we regularly fall short of God’s desires for us.

Have you ever noticed how people try to avoid the subject of sin altogether? Do we think that if we don’t acknowledge sin, it doesn’t exist? We assume people who don’t attend church or read the Bible don’t even know they’re sinning in the first place. But for those of us who have begun to understand the grip of sin and what that means for us, we still don’t want to talk about it or admit to our failures. Hebrews 1:1-4 – God’s Son

Read Hebrews 1:1-4

Revealing Jesus’ identity as the Son of God, in the opening verses of Hebrews, would have been shocking to his fellow Jews. The book of Hebrews was written as encouragement to Jewish converts to Christianity in the early church. They would have been facing many challenges to stay true and not fall back into their comfortable Jewish traditions.

The same counsel that helped those Jewish Christians can help us today navigate all the mixed messages we encounter in this world. Jesus is God’s Son. Period. Micah 7:14-20 – Who Is Like God?

Read Micah 7:14-20

What a great conclusion to the book of Micah which began with a resounding declaration of doom for Judah and Israel! How fitting that Micah closes this book with what seems almost like a prayer or song reminding us of God’s grace.

Jesus called himself the good shepherd in John 10. Micah uses that image, and I can’t help but think of Jesus. A shepherd guides his sheep and protects their welfare. Even so, the world will see and be amazed at what the Lord will do for us. I long for the day when people will “cover their mouths in silent awe, deaf to everything around them.” Can you even imagine?
