Hebrews 10:32-39 – Confidence in God

Read Hebrews 10:32-39

When I started reading this passage, I immediately remembered my first memories of hearing about Jesus as a wide-eyed child. And then the Preacher yanked me into a dark place, recalling the persecution the faithful endured in his day. That was a profound moment to reflect on the differences in how we first experienced Jesus.

It’s certainly a good reminder to count our blessings. It’s way too easy to take the love of God for granted and forget he wants to be in relationship with us. The more we learn about God through his word, the more confidence we have in him and our faith is strengthened.

Thankfully, I haven’t got memories like the Preacher talks of here. “Remember how you remained faithful even though it meant terrible suffering.” Have you ever experienced persecution for your faith? Before answering “no,” think about how political issues involving our faith and values have become. Where is Bible truth in all of that? Our freedoms are being trampled if we can’t speak that truth.

The terrible suffering can be expected. We are witnessing the evaporation of tolerance for Christians in our world. We can feel victimized and become fearful or hateful. Or, we can confidently trust in God and find joy. I choose to focus on the positive, and the Preacher says it so eloquently. “You knew there were better things waiting for you that will last forever.” We do know that where the Spirit of the Lord is there is freedom. That’s where I want to be focusing.

What can we do to be confident in God and strengthen our faith? Ask for the Holy Spirit to speak to your heart. Talk to God and listen for his response. Receive encouragement by surrounding yourself with other believers. Spend time in God’s word and you’ll find nuggets like Isaiah 41:10: “Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.”

Can you think of other Bible stories that show us about having confidence in God? For this week’s Sunday School lesson, the girls at the orphanage are going to learn more about the three men who survived being thrown into a fiery furnace because of their faith in God. They were confident in God’s power. You can read Daniel 3 for that story.

The Preacher wants us to “keep our eye on the prize” and points to Habakkuk for God’s promise. “For in just a little while, the Coming One will come and not delay. And my righteous ones will live by faith. But I will take no pleasure in anyone who turns away.” This end-times prophecy will be fulfilled one day.

Don’t turn your back on God. “We are the faithful ones, whose souls will be saved.” Does that give you the assurance you need? How confident are you in God?

Let’s pray. Lord, I thank you for the promises you give those who stay faithful to you. Help me to stand boldly and patiently as I wait for your return. Refresh me with your peace and joy. Shield me from attacks of the evil one and empower me to overcome. May I focus on your goodness and a future with you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
