Read Psalm 91

Don’t you love the boldness of the psalmist, sharing such a deep and reverent faith in God, the Creator? The descriptions of God in this psalm are images of a strong protector. When the world feels like it is crashing in around you, read this psalm!

As we examine God’s character from the perspective of His majesty and grace, these verses remind us of His great love and care for us. We may be disappointed by friends and family, but God is steadfast and true. He stands guard as a strong protector for us.

Getting to know God is like getting to know any new friend. Realizing that our Creator wants to be in a relationship with us is enough to make some people uncomfortable. Why is that? Our feelings of inadequacy can creep in when we question everything, because everything seems new when living in the light of Christ’s love.

There are some great images here for us to cling to. Perhaps this is the first time you are thinking of God like the psalmist describes. How much stronger we are when we can face the adversities and challenges in life with the assurance of protection given by the psalmist.

What example gives you the most peace? Maybe it’s the promised peace or place of safety. Life can be chaotic, and we can hold stress in crevices of our body we don’t even realize. David knows I love a good neck rub, and we’re always amazed at the pockets of tension he discovers.

Maybe you feel under attack, as those “arrows” that fly by day. Maybe sickness is invading your body or that of a loved one. Memorize verse 11, which says about God, “For he will order his angels to protect you wherever you go.” I like to imagine I have angels standing guard as I make my way through life, guiding my steps. I have always liked the picture of a mama bird huddling her chicks close when I read, “He will shelter you with his wings.” Moms are great, but God protects us even more!

Pick a closing image to cling to. I especially like when the Lord says, “I will rescue those who love me.” You have made the decision to listen to God, to accept his invitation to lead your life. He also protects, listens, answers prayer, honors, and saves us. Allow yourself to feel God’s peace today.
