Read Ezra 5:1-5
I’ve reflected on the prophecies of Haggai and Zechariah before in the book of the 12 Prophets. These prophets of God spoke encouragement to those charged with rebuilding the temple of the Lord. Haggai, especially, is a hidden gem filled with all sorts of encouragement we can apply today.
We’re seeing how this rebuilding project is getting a lot of attention from the enemies of God. But God ordained this work, so I’m confident he won’t let it fail. In today’s reading, Tattenai, governor of the province Jerusalem is part of, attempts to distract the people so they question their motives. We can be thankful the people had prophets like Haggai and Zechariah to keep them grounded and devoted to God’s purpose.
Has your faith ever been tested to where you question your own devotion? What do you do when deciding if you are following God’s will or your own? Who are the faithful ones you turn to for guidance and encouragement?
A time may come when you are asked to defend your faith. Have you ever rehearsed what you’d say? One thing is certainly, nobody can question your testimony. It’s your story. They may not like what you have to say or have a hard time grasping such devotion to an invisible God, but they can’t take your story away.
The returnees could continue their work with confidence. Ezra tells us, “God was watching over them.” Don’t we have that same promise? We even have the Holy Spirit who dwells within us so we’re not alone. When on our mission for the Lord, he goes before us.
Here are some great verses to remind us of how God stays close. Joshua 1:9, “This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Deuteronomy 31:8, “The Lord is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.” When we imagine God going ahead of us to prepare a place for us, our assurance and peace multiplies.
Don’t let the messages of the world cause you to stumble or question your motives. Remember what Jesus did for you on the cross. Remember how much God loved you that he sent Jesus in the first place. Remember that God has a purpose for your life and has gifted you exactly how you need to accomplish his will. You will find solace in knowing Jesus. Let his will be your motivation.
Let’s pray. Lord, thank you for the protection you provide and the unconditional love you give, even when I stumble. Surround me with those who encourage me and lift me up. I want to serve you and help others see how mighty and merciful you are. I praise your name for it is great. I am humbled to be used by you. Thank you for the gifts you have given. Help me to use them wisely. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
