Read 2 Chronicles 1:1-17
The book of 2nd Chronicles opens with Solomon’s getting the feel for what it means to be king. This book will chronicle Solomon’s reign as well as all the kings until the time of exile. We’ll be taking a glimpse at all these kingdoms; each king descending from King David. We’ll find out which ones are good and which ones are bad. Solomon clearly starts his reign in a wise way.
What did he do? He sought God at the altar in Gideon. He didn’t go alone either. Solomon called together quite a group of leaders to the place of worship so they could consult the LORD. Solomon sacrificed 1,000 burnt offerings. Can you even imagine?
In response, God appeared to Solomon with a simple question, “What do you want? Ask, and I will give it to you!” Keeping in mind that Solomon was a young, newly appointed king, he could have said anything. What would you have asked for? Solomon’s response surprised and impressed God. Solomon’s wish was not selfish at all. Solomon said, “Give me the wisdom and knowledge to lead them properly, for who could possibly govern this great people of yours?”
I know I’ve asked God for wisdom time and time again to help me in situations where I feel unsure. Looking back at my life, I can see where godly wisdom obviously influenced my decisions. And then there are those times when I had asked for wisdom, but my decisions were not very wise at all. Sometimes we just miss the signs God is giving us.
Solomon was ready for his mission. David had set him up for success, and now God was blessing him with great abundance. The LORD says in verse 12, “I will certainly give you the wisdom and knowledge you requested. But I will also give you wealth, riches, and fame such as no other king has had before you or will ever have in the future!” How will Solomon respond to such blessings?
We can take note of how Solomon responded to God and what he asked for. Even Solomon’s response was gushing with respect and awe. His request of God was not selfish but asking for something that would help with his kingdom work.
We have kingdom work to do, too. What do you need to ask God to provide that will help you further your ministry or mission? It would seem from this text that God loves to give his people the tools they need to be better at serving him. What are those tools for you?
Let’s pray. Lord, your faithfulness is without end, and I trust you with my life. Help me navigate when I encounter new believers or people that do not yet follow you. Give me the words to say so that I attract them to you and not repel them. Open my eyes to see those people who are ready to hear the Good News. Take away any fear or feelings of inadequacy. May I rest in you and your truth all my days. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
