Ezra 6:19-22 – Passover Celebration

Read Ezra 6:19-22

The first part of Ezra and the temple restoration ends with this passage – the celebration of Passover. It sounds like this was the first time the returnees celebrated this festival of remembrance since being back “home.” What a beautiful bridge to close the chapter of their past wrongs and open the new chapter full of promise of following the Lord and his decrees!

To celebrate the Passover is to remember how God showed up powerfully to save you. We can celebrate what Jesus did for us every day! Sharing in this celebration was a brilliant way to signify a unified heart devoted to God. Such a fitting end to the dedication festivities!

Mark 9:38-41 – Using the Name of Jesus

Read Mark 9:38-41

We see another misunderstanding here on the part of the disciples. They may have been part of Jesus’ “inner circle” of followers, but they were not the only ones Jesus would use to benefit the kingdom. This was a teachable moment for them in that regard.

I imagine they were a bit surprised, and even put off, that someone outside their little band of followers would be casting out demons in Jesus’ name. But their exasperation was not that this man was using Jesus’ name so much as that this charismatic prophet was not in “their group.”

Hebrews 12:1-4 – It Takes a Village

Read Hebrews 12:1-4

Have you ever trained for a marathon? Me either. But I have attended one, cheering for our daughter years ago. The energy was quite something as we watched the runners jog past, some looking like they could run forever. Some, I fear, may never have finished the race! In either case, the determination was tangible. It was an awesome moment for me because I have never fancied myself as a runner and yet in that moment it seemed like something everyone should do.

We do get to run our own race after all. Our journey through life is often thought of as a race. When moving to Mexico, I escaped the “rat” race of life. We were just commenting yesterday about the pleasant pace of life here. We’re embracing this season of life that allows us spending quality time with God. Just like I always yearned to do!
