Read Mark 9:38-41
We see another misunderstanding here on the part of the disciples. They may have been part of Jesus’ “inner circle” of followers, but they were not the only ones Jesus would use to benefit the kingdom. This was a teachable moment for them in that regard.
I imagine they were a bit surprised, and even put off, that someone outside their little band of followers would be casting out demons in Jesus’ name. But their exasperation was not that this man was using Jesus’ name so much as that this charismatic prophet was not in “their group.”
We may be surprised even today to see the people God uses for his purposes. They may not look like us or live like us, but those with hearts devoted to Jesus are always encouraged to use their gifts for the kingdom. The early Christians would soon see how even Gentiles, their non-Jewish neighbors, would be given access to Jesus.
Jesus helps us see the bigger picture. Many people would follow Jesus and call upon his name for great feats of mercy and grace. We often close our prayers with “in Jesus’ name.” There is great power in the name of Jesus. When we call upon the name of Jesus, we call upon his power to make us whole, sustain us, and lead us on our faith journey. We’ve seen how even demons respect the name of Jesus and flee when it’s called upon.
Jesus shared some wise words. “Anyone who is not against us is for us.” Even today, we’ll encounter haters who don’t understand Jesus or his loving kindness. Many people are against the church and all it stands for. Sadly, they are missing out on the most important relationship any of us can have. A relationship with Jesus gives us access to great power.
What else does Jesus tell us? He urges graciousness and generosity rather than judgment on others. Especially for those who offer support or encouragement for representatives of Jesus. We are those representatives.
When is the last time you received some sort of support (glass of water) from someone because they recognized you as a Christ follower? Sadly, this doesn’t happen all that much anymore.
It’s not always easy for missionaries to raise support. I know God has called me to ministry with Mexican orphans. And just like Jesus said, God is more than ready to reward all who support my missionary journey. The young Mexican girls that I work with are in desperate need of your prayers and support. As followers of Christ, we all have a job to do. Don’t be afraid, simply remember you can call on Jesus’ name. His power is available for you, too! Take some time to listen for God to speak to you about your earthly mission.
Let’s pray. Thank you for using me for your kingdom. It is sometimes hard to see other people we don’t know carrying out a mission on your behalf. It is fantastic that you can use your followers in many ways. Help me remember to be gracious for all support that comes my way. I want to be generous with others on their own journey of faith. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
