What a reading to close this week’s focus on our majestic and gracious God! Psalm 23 is one of those cherished psalms that many turn to in times of struggle, loss, and confusion. Understanding the significance of God being referred to as our shepherd is key.
Shepherds are one of those professions that used to be very common, and the psalmist’s audience would be very familiar. David, the psalmist, was a shepherd boy before he became king. David would know firsthand that the shepherd is the hero of every sheep. The relationship between sheep and shepherd is extremely close. Sheep recognize the voice of their shepherd, and shepherds are very careful to never misplace one of their sheep. For David to describe God in this way is powerful.
As sheep, we are especially drawn to our shepherd, the Lord. Many people talk about how they feel something is missing in their life, never realizing that the missing piece is a relationship with God. The psalm says our shepherd gives us all that we need. Our “wants” may lead us down a path of materialism, but it’s amazing how many times God supplies those as well.
Was there a part of this psalm that spoke to your heart today? Perhaps you are feeling weary, and taking a break along a peaceful stream sounds appealing. Or maybe you’re afraid of something happening in your life right now. Knowing that God is close beside you, even in those dark valleys, can bring comfort.
The psalmist was confident in God and their relationship. We can boldly proclaim this promise for ourselves. “Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life.” Think of it. God’s goodness and love are seeking you–and now you can enjoy it.
Our promise back to God is simply this: “I will live in the house of the Lord forever.” What does that mean for you? We declare that we choose God, and we want to get to know him. We want to enjoy God’s presence for the rest of our lives and into eternity. We have finally found a place we can call home, in the presence of God, our Shepherd.
Let’s pray. My Shepherd, my Lord, thank you for the beautiful promises you have for me in this psalm. Forgive me when I lose my trust in you and let fear creep inside. I know you protect me from so many things I can’t even see. Thank you for your constant presence by my side. Help me rest in you and your grace for the rest of my days. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
