Ephesians 1:1-8 – Praise

Words "Praise the LORD" made out of different kinds of wood

Read Ephesians 1:1-8

Paul opens this letter to the Ephesians by introducing himself as chosen by God, acknowledging the faithfulness of the believers there, and giving them a blessing. As an apostle of Jesus, Paul was given the mission of making sure people understood what it meant to be followers of Jesus.

From the start, Paul sets a great example for a life of faith by giving “all praise” to God. It is good for us to regularly sing God’s praises, remembering all the blessings he has given us. We don’t need to wait for our quiet time of prayer and reflection to exalt him for what he has done. Paul is praising in the middle of this letter!

How does it make you feel to know that God has loved you even before the earth was formed? That’s a hard one to wrap our limited brains around. Beyond that, he chose us to be united with Christ. The fact we are followers of Jesus is no accident. Can I get a “Hallelujah!”?

Sitting here in this moment, we can’t help but give praise and honor to God for the privilege he has given us. What are some of your favorite ways to praise God? Do you like listening to and singing along with praise music like I do? Do you like spending time on your knees in prayer? Do you like surrounding yourself with nature and the beauty of God’s creation?

Getting ourselves into the habit of praise may take some doing. Paul’s reminders of God’s majesty and master plan help us to jumpstart that mindset. We can too easily let the struggles of life interfere with our praise and worship. These verses can help us stay grounded in the truth of what God has done for us. When we keep our eyes on Jesus amidst the chaos of life, it’s easier to feel the assurance of our inheritance and forever with God.

Which of Paul’s examples of God’s goodness speak to your heart today? When we can keep God and his mercy and grace in the forefront of our minds, it’s easier to tap into the power and strength he makes available to us.

Take some time today to make your own list of the great things God has done. You can start by listening to this song by Phil Wickham called “Great Things.” We’ll be worshipping God with this song at youth group tonight!

abiding in Jesus, praying womanLet’s pray. Father God, you are wonderful beyond description. My heart overflows knowing you have chosen me, forgiven me, and freed me from the grip of sin. Help me to keep praise on my lips at all times. Thank you for all you have done for me and continue to do each day. It is an honor and privilege to be in a relationship with you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
