Thank heavens Samuel knew what God was about to do. The people were already listening to Samuel and the words he spoke. But Samuel is not the focus of this reading. The Ark of the Covenant takes center stage now.

We are reminded that Israel is fighting with the Philistines. This has been an ongoing saga. We read of it in the Book of Judges. I’m not certain if this reading is a parallel time to battles described elsewhere in Scripture. But the Israelites are not winning. What are they thinking? Where is God?

Joshua 3:1-17 – Did You See That Coming?

Read Joshua 3:1-17

A couple chapters ago, we heard the encouraging and comforting words from God that he would be with Joshua. Joshua’s courage was the result of this promise. Today we read about how Joshua rounds up the Israelites to prepare them for their journey across the Jordan River. God reminds him of the promise. “Today I will begin to make you a great leader in the eyes of all the Israelites. They will know that I am with you, just as I was with Moses.”

Take a moment to just imagine what everyone is feeling? I can see how some may be wondering why they had to hurry up just to wait again along the shore. Others may be nervous, perhaps even fearful of the water. Yet, Joshua was taking charge. It’s hard to imagine he had any fear at all. He was ready. His moment had come.

Deuteronomy 10:1-11 – The Ark of the Covenant

Read Deuteronomy 10:1-11

I can’t help but think of the movie, “Raiders of the Lost Ark” when I read Biblical accounts about the Ark. I know that movie was only someone’s imagination, but the power of the Ark of the Covenant should never be forgotten. God’s laws were contained in the Ark.

Recall from our last reading that Moses demolished the first stone tablets out of his anger at the people’s disobedience. God was gracious enough to give him a second chance with new tablets, now securely placed in the Ark. God’s grace was also extended to the people as a result of Moses’ begging and pleading. God’s grace is all sufficient.
