Numbers 4:1-49 – Clan Duties

Read Numbers 4:1-49

Why do they have to die? I’ve always wondered that. The LORD said, “The Kohathites must never enter the sanctuary to look at the sacred objects for even a moment, or they will die.” The LORD also wanted them to be safe and gave them the way out, to always be in the company of Aaron or one of his sons. This command speaks to God’s holiness and how to preserve and honor it. It also shows God’s concern for his children.

The three clans of Levites are further singled out and given jobs to do with respect to moving the tabernacle. When we see the great number of men eligible for service, it would seem this tabernacle structure in the middle of the desert is really quite something. Having a clear expectation of duties alleviates anyone being left without a job to do and assures that the tabernacle’s holiness is preserved as it moves from place to place.

God commanded a lot of lists be made of these individuals, those who were making history as God’s people were establishing their presence in the land we now know as the “Holy Land.” Was there another purpose for these accountability lists?

Dependability. God’s plan requires that the Levites depend on each other. The clans are each assigned different tasks that require them to work together. When we depend on someone, we trust them. Two great passages come to mind for me.

In terms of community, Ecclesiastes 4:12 says,  A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.” And Jesus’ promise in Matthew 18:20,  For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.”

As we’ve discovered in Leviticus and now Numbers, God has so many things planned out for his people. Can you imagine the chaotic mess that would ensue in dismantling the tabernacle if such a plan were not in place. God’s design was thoughtful and efficient. I wonder how many times the tabernacle was moved. We will likely have a better idea of this number as we read through Numbers.

For now, let’s marvel at how God equips his people for certain jobs. If he did it here to make this situation better, we can be confident God continues to make assignments to help us in our own maneuvers of life. Isn’t it something how just when you wonder how something is going to get done, you get some sort of burst of energy, or a helping hand, appears. God provides for his children.

colorful animation of prayer hands and hearts and flowersLet’s pray. Lord, I thank you for how you have equipped me to serve you. Forgive me for the times I drift away and don’t see your provision and your presence. Thank you for the community you have surrounded me with to guide and comfort. I am ready for service. Use me, LORD. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
