John 8:12-20 – Light of the World

Read John 8:12-20

How could they not recognize Jesus as God’s son? They had only been reading about him and waiting for him as long as they could remember. It was intentional. It was God’s plan. We already know it is God who calls us to himself. These religious leaders had to be indifferent or the “time” would never come, and Jesus would not have died a sacrificial death. But I am getting ahead of myself. We aren’t even halfway through the book of John.

Jesus’ words here are prophetic for all. Timeless words that will play over and over for generations to come. “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.” For us who know the whole story, it’s easier to interpret these words and understand their meaning. I’ve tried to put myself in the place of those hearing these words for the first time, in person, surrounded by the scrutiny of the religious leaders and oppression of the government.

I don’t think any of us want to “walk in darkness” or “stumble through the darkness” as another version puts it. The world is a dark and scary place when you look at the evil, corruption, hatred, wars, jealousy, poverty, loneliness, and fear. (Don’t get me started!) When we have the “light that leads to life” we have hope. We know we have a future that is so much brighter than we could ever imagine.

The people of Jesus’ day were tired of oppression and were waiting for a savior to bring them to safety. Little did they know the peace Jesus brought was eternal, not necessarily for their present rescue. We, too, can’t expect a miraculous end to our troubles. What we can rely on is a companion to walk with us through the storm. There is light at the end of the tunnel, so to speak. That tunnel is our lives.  We just need to keep our eyes on Jesus.

Listen to Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus HERE.

Let’s pray. Lord, I come to you amazed and in awe of your eloquence and grace. Your teaching is so profound,  yet we see it fall on deaf ears. Though not “their time” it is ours to hear your words of hope. You are the light of the world, and I choose to follow you to stay in the light. May your radiance shine through me as I journey through life. Bring those people into my path who need a word from you. Fill my mouth with the words you would say to them. Now, still my heart so I can hear you clearly. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
