Ezra 8:1-23 – Ezra’s Return

Read Ezra 8:1-23

Ezra headed up the second wave of returnees to Jerusalem. In today’s reading, we get an accounting of who came with him. Interesting that he had to recruit some Levites and temple workers to join the traveling group. You’ll recall a good number of Levites were included in the first wave.

Ezra is again setting a good example for us when he fasts and humbles himself before the journey. I can remember many family car trips beginning with a word of prayer asking for God’s protection over our journey. Those five-hour car rides are nothing in comparison with the several month trek on foot through the wilderness to Jerusalem. No matter the distance, God travels with those who ask!

The text says that Ezra orders the people to fast and be humbled before God. He knows it’s that important. Their journey will be dangerous. Their big caravan would likely be target for robbers, so God’s hand of protection is critical. Did God pay attention? Absolutely. Ezra’s words declare, “and he heard our prayer.”

Ezra’s return marks God’s second installment in rebuilding his people. God knew his wayward people would need encouragement and spiritual direction. If left to their own vices, their human tendencies would kick in and selfish desires would be the first sinful behavior to infect them. It makes sense to me that there would be a time gap between the first set of returnees and the second.

Do you think Ezra felt like he was ready for this mission? It sure seems like he is. Even if he felt weak and unsure, he knew that turning to God was the answer. How many times have you been lost in your fear or uncertainty but forgotten to cry out for God’s rescue or mercy? Don’t feel guilty – we can all raise our hand for that one. Because this world celebrates “independence,” we try our best to do things on our own. When we forget to rely on God’s power, we are simply limiting ourselves. That’s quite a thought to wrap our heads around!

Take time today to think about what is happening in your life right now. Are you struggling with a decision? Are you doing your best to make it through each day without having a melt down? Are you feeling weak and unsure about an issue of faith? Whatever it is for you that seems unsurmountable, remember who has your back.

Remember what Ezra did – he humbled himself and prayed for God’s assistance. That kind of response isn’t for Bible heroes only. God wants to hear from you!

Let’s pray. Father God how blessed you must be when your people return to you and ask you for help. Thank you for the joy I feel when I remember you are the one in charge and I don’t have to be! There are so many things in my life right now that feel out of control. Help me to rest in the peace you offer and trust that you will help me figure it all out. I am ready to humble myself before you and watch you work. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
