1 Corinthians 3:16-23 – Who Do You Belong To?

Read 1 Corinthians 3:16-23

This was a wake-up call! “For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God.” What did you think when you read that? That verse, taken alone, could really rock your world if you’re a book worm and like to consume knowledge. However, I think the vast knowledge available to us in books is different than what’s referred to here as “wisdom of the world.” Yet still, it’s “foolishness” to God who is the creator of all things.

Our reading today brings together all that that Paul has shared in his letter so far. We note a huge distinction between God’s wisdom and the wisdom of the world. Worldly wisdom seems to be more focused on self and motivations that don’t include God. I can see where that would be foolish to God. Why would people want to rely on themselves when they can rely on God? But there seems to be an epidemic of people trying to “be God” when they should know there is only ONE God!

Non-believers just pass through life without experiencing the depth of God’s love for them. They often wonder “what is the meaning to life?” They miss out on the honor given to be caretakers of all that is God’s and ambassadors of Christ’s love and sacrifice. Think about what you are holding most precious. How blessed do you feel knowing God has provided that for you to care for?

We considered in a previous reflection the importance of being careful not to be too enamored by a human leader. Paul brings this home again! We are all sinful beings. Doesn’t it make more sense to be focused on the one who is without sin, Jesus? Isn’t Jesus the model we want to follow to be better at loving God and others as well as trusting God’s faithfulness?

What message in today’s reading spoke to you? I liked the comforting feeling that washed over me when I read these words. “Everything belongs to you, and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God.” Sit with that for just a moment or two. Or more. For me, I felt like my whole heart was expanding.

When I focus on the fact I belong to Christ, it takes away some of the pressure I allow myself to feel. Life will bring pressure and stress; we can’t avoid it. But there’s a peace knowing I have a place with Jesus. I don’t need to worry or be concerned about anything. I can delight in the peace and freedom I feel knowing I have a place where I fit in. In those times when I feel like an outcast here on earth, I can rest in Jesus’ presence knowing I 100% belong to him!

The Bible tells us in several places, including Psalm 24:1, that everything belongs to God. “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. The world and all its people belong to him.” What an honor and privilege it is to be cared for so deeply by the creator!

If you are still struggling with feeling inadequate in this world, remember who you belong to. If you are feeling like you don’t fit in because of your faith, remember who loves you.

Let’s pray …
Father God, I feel like a treasure to belong to you. May my life reflect you so that others can see you and want to belong to you as well. There are times when I feel a bit like an outcast, but I know that you are there for me and never leave my side. Remind me of that promise and help me avoid being caught up in the “wisdom of this world.” All praise goes to you God, Father of our Savior Jesus Christ. In His name I pray, Amen.
