Read 1 Chronicles 29:10-20
Everything belongs to God. “Everything in the heavens and on earth is yours, O Lord, and this is your kingdom. We adore you as the one who is over all things.” I love how David acknowledges God’s majesty in his prayer of praise. The richness of our own prayer life magnifies when we focus on God’s mighty power.
King David sets a great example for the assembly by praying to the LORD like this. David’s praise of God’s goodness flows right into his gratitude for all that God has done and will continue to do. David speaks of our lives as being here for only a moment. In God’s timing, that is most certainly true. Our lives are but a blip on God’s timeline, and yet he loves us so much.
When I think about how fleeting life is I want to do more, dream bigger, and make sure I make a difference in one way or another. I realize that I can do nothing of any significance on my own power. When I have tried to make something happen, most times I hit a wall and see no progress at all. But when God is directing me and leading the way, we accomplish more than I ever imagined.
So why do I keep trying to do it all myself? You think I’d learn that I am powerless without God. I’ve got everything I need – God’s word to guide and the Holy Spirit inside to advise. Sometimes I take these resources for granted.
David even prayed for us when he said, “make your people always want to obey you. See to it that their love for you never changes.” What a thoughtful prayer. David knew that life was so much better when he obeyed God. Despite all the military victories, David’s love and respect for the LORD was strong until the end. How much different would our world look today if all of God’s people obeyed him and loved him like David.
One last time, King David publicly prays for his son, Solomon. David knows firsthand the challenges that come with being king, and he has done everything he can to set Solomon up for success. Asking God to help Solomon remain faithful and obedient is the best prayer a parent can pray. This prayer was fitting for both David the father and David the king ready to hand his kingdom over to his son. What emotions must have been coursing through David in that moment!
Take some time today to pray your own prayer of praise and thanksgiving for how God is working in your life.
Let’s pray. Lord, you are so mighty and all-knowing. Examine my heart. I pray that you will find integrity and goodness there. I long to be used by you in a way that will make a difference. Forgive me for my feeble attempts that often fail. Help me to navigate this world, making decisions that honor you and glorify your name. Help me to find my way. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
