Read 1 Chronicles 12:1-40
Today’s reading starts with a flashback. David was a mighty warrior before becoming king, and this story takes place while Saul was still on the throne. If you’re wondering why David was hiding from Saul, it was out of fear. Before his death, Saul was jealous of David’s rising popularity and success in battle.
The Chronicler picks up the story with David on the run. He was a bit of an “outlaw” because of Saul’s jealousy. David’s own wife, and daughter of Saul, had aided in his escape. You can read more about that amazing story in 1 Samuel 19:11-17.
Even when David was at his weakest, he was able to attract a great following. Some of these men were from Saul’s own family! It must have been evident that Saul’s leadership had become corrupted by selfishness. David’s leadership, on the other hand, was fresh and focused on God.
David had to be sure he wasn’t being trapped. The Holy Spirit prompted the warrior, Amasai, to assure David with these words: “We are yours, David! We are on your side, son of Jesse. Peace and prosperity be with you, and success to all who help you, for your God is the one who helps you.” David’s popularity was being fueled by God’s mighty hand.
In verse 23, the scene changes to Hebron where David was officially appointed king. David clearly had the support and confidence of those he was leading. What a great way to start his reign!
Did you notice that all twelve tribes were listed as having an army supporting David? What a spectacle as warriors from all tribes descended on Hebron eager to show their support for David becoming king! Many generations had passed since descendants of all twelve of Jacob’s sons had been in one place sharing food and celebrating together.
What is your take-away from today’s reading? For me, it’s seeing David’s popularity and know it was God’s hand at work. David was obedient to God, and God blessed David’s role as king in return. I want my leadership style to be wholly dependent on God, too. Pleasing God is my goal, and if that makes me popular with people, fantastic!
Let’s pray. Lord, help me not to worry so much about whether I’m liked or not as a leader. Instead, may I be totally devoted to you, pleasing you with all I say and do. The popularity I seek is in your eyes alone. I ask for your blessing on the ministries I am part of and seek your direction. I look forward to seeing your hand at work so I can honor you and know I am on the right track. May I fix my eyes on you and your goals for my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
