Hebrews 2:1-18 – Are You Adrift?

Read Hebrews 2:1-18

Do you ever feel far from God? It’s in those moments when we have drifted away for some reason, distracted from focusing on God’s grace and power. The author here reminds us how easily we can drift away from God if we aren’t careful. God’s message never changes, and we need to cling to it. When coming off a faith “high,” we can be especially prone to these drifts when reality starts to close in around us.

Pondering over how God could care for us, mere mortals, continues for us. As quoted here from Psalm 8, this wonder extends to the majesty of God and his creation. We are blessed to be made by God, loved by God, and instructed by God. If you ever need a dose of awestruck wonder about who God is and what he has done, read Psalm 8. John 20:1-18 – Jesus is Alive!

Read John 20:1-18

Since Jesus’ body had been laid to rest, his followers would have all been experiencing their own grief and loss. It had been three days, and we see how Peter, John, and Mary responded. Mary arrived at the tomb while it was still dark. I imagine she couldn’t sleep and was missing her Lord. If only she could get closer, maybe she would feel less lonely. She must have been horrified to find Jesus’ body missing.

Peter and John were the disciples Mary found to help her process what was happening. The story had to have sounded incredible because the disciples’ immediate response was to run and see for themselves. In typical “ambitious” Peter style, he burst into the tomb immediately upon arrival, while John was cautiously looking inside. I think I would have been more like John, curious but not quite as bold. 2 Corinthians 5:7 – What Do You See?

For we live by believing and not by seeing. (2 Corinthians 5:7)

I don’t know about you, but I certainly look forward to seeing Jesus face to face. I’m not trying to rush to the end of my life or anything, but he did promise to return and that could always happen first. But until that day comes, this verse explains our way of life. We have to believe in something we cannot see.

Context: Interesting that this verse is part of Paul’s discussion about our new bodies, the one we receive after we die. While we are living in our current bodies that get wrinkled and have aches and pains, we are not “at home” yet with the Lord. While we’re here, we live by faith, and that’s a great message to remind us to hold on. Continue reading “2 Corinthians 5:7 – What Do You See?”

1 Peter 1:10-12 – What the Prophets Foretold

Read 1 Peter 1:10-12

The prophets of the Old Testament did not only talk about events that were going to happen in their day. Some of their messages pointed to a future time, the day of the Lord, the day of God’s deliverance. Interesting that Peter would include a reference to the prophets so early in his letter. I suppose he was making a connection with his audience.

Everything about being a Christ-follower was new. But reflecting on the prophets of old would be comforting and familiar to those with Jewish roots. Think about what the prophets must have thought when they spoke of “gracious salvation.” That was a foreign concept to them.
