For we live by believing and not by seeing. (2 Corinthians 5:7)
I don’t know about you, but I certainly look forward to seeing Jesus face to face. I’m not trying to rush to the end of my life or anything, but he did promise to return and that could always happen first. But until that day comes, this verse explains our way of life. We have to believe in something we cannot see.
Context: Interesting that this verse is part of Paul’s discussion about our new bodies, the one we receive after we die. While we are living in our current bodies that get wrinkled and have aches and pains, we are not “at home” yet with the Lord. While we’re here, we live by faith, and that’s a great message to remind us to hold on.
Especially when we see things happening in the world we can’t explain or understand. When we see divisions in families, horrific natural disasters, and war-torn villages, we can rest in the assurance this is not our home. We may not be able to see the future, but we can trust that Jesus is working everything out for our benefit.
This memory verse is perfect when we’re feeling disillusioned or weary. It’s short and to the point. We can claim this great reminder when we see things that are not helpful. In all moments, we can turn to faith and know that the best is yet to come.
What is it that you believe in? As believers, our immediate answer is “I believe in Jesus.” That’s wonderful! We can also believe in gravity, that the sun will rise and set each day, that God loves us. What else do you “believe” in without seeing? Those are the things we truly trust.
When I first read this verse, I couldn’t help but think of Thomas, the disciple who needed to see Jesus alive before he’d believe the resurrection actually happened. Thomas represents us in so many ways, especially when we demand proof to support our faith. In those moments when it’s hard to simply believe.
Remember what Jesus told Thomas? John 20:29 says, “Then Jesus told him, You believe because you have seen me. Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.” We haven’t seen Jesus face to face yet, and yet we believe. We are blessed. How will you respond to Jesus today?
Let’s pray. Father, I am so delighted to be spending time with you today. I look forward to spending time together. I love how your word just washes over me with new messages each time. Use me to help others believe and trust in you without seeing you in the flesh. Strengthen my own faith as I desire to draw nearer to you each day. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
