1 Peter 2:11-25 – Authority

Read 1 Peter 2:11-25

I can still hear my mother telling me, “Respect your elders.” She meant people in authority like my teachers, the police, the pastor, and, of course, my parents. At the time, I had no idea this was a Biblical concept. Peter expands this for us, “For the Lord’s sake, submit to all human authority—whether the king as head of state, or the officials he has appointed.”

I don’t intend to make this political, but we should pray for our government’s leaders, whether we agree with them or not. Who are we to question what God allows in this world? Sadly, as you look at the world leaders today, finding a true man of God with a heart for God like King David is hard to find. Even King David had his faults and weaknesses. Micah 6:1-8 – Be Humble

Read Micah 6:1-8

Micah is another prophet used by God who served at the time of Amos, Isaiah, and others. The message of the coming judgment and pardon available was just that important. God wanted to give his people every possible chance to save themselves. Even though we aren’t in Micah’s first audience, we can glean wisdom from how God addresses the wayward people of that time.

How would you respond if you were asked to state your case against God? Would you think of all the bad things that have happened to you and blame him? Romans 12:2 – Be Transformed!

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.” (Romans 12:2)

There is so much focus these days on transformation. I don’t think a day goes by when I don’t see some sort of physical transformation celebrated on social media–from weight loss to wrinkle reduction. We applaud those who must now be feeling more content with their appearance. But those are not the transformations Paul was talking about here.

Context (Romans 12:1-5): The book of Romans covers so much ground teaching us about living a Christian life. This short section alone deals with how we should devote ourselves to God and what that behavior looks like. Paul warns us to be careful not to focus on the wrong things in life, even when looking in the mirror. Who are we as Christ followers? Continue reading “Romans 12:2 – Be Transformed!”

Romans 3:23 – Don’t Deny It

“For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.” (Romans 3:23)

There is no denying it. This verse calls us out as we are included in the “everyone” Paul is referring to. What have we done? We have sinned and fallen short of God’s hope for us. Remembering we’re not perfect keeps us honest and keen on realizing we need a Savior. That’s why this memory verse is so powerful.

Context: Paul’s instructions to the Romans in this chapter center around the sinful tendencies of humankind. Paul is quick to remind us that Jesus took our punishment. We can be made right with God not by keeping the law but because of Jesus. This is a key section of Scripture, and this verse is right there in the midst of it.
