Acts 14:1-28 – A Divided Audience

Read Acts 14:1-28

Good things were certainly happening for the kingdom, but certainly not without peril to the lives of our missionaries. From the way our author, Luke, describes it, Paul wasn’t phased by the threat of being stoned; he just kept on with his message elsewhere. People were listening and believing in what Paul and Barnabas were preaching about. How could you want to stop that momentum?

However, we’re seeing a pattern develop here. Division. Not everybody is on board with what’s being preached. Those in opposition are turning to violence. Mark 15:1-20 – Death Sentence

Read Mark 15:1-20

The religious leaders didn’t have the final word. They had to take Jesus before the ruling authorities to see if their death sentence for religious matters would be acted upon. Pilate was the governor at that time, and he was no dummy. He saw through to the religious leaders’ motives.

Mark 3:20-30 – The Unforgiveable Sin

Read Mark 3:20-30

What an encounter we witness in this reading! Jesus is busy fulfilling his mission, but even those closest to him don’t yet understand. They think Jesus has gone mad because he’s so busy serving by helping, healing, and casting out demons. The religious leaders are the ones who really miss the mark. Is their pride so strong that they must blaspheme the Holy Spirit?

I suppose if they were to accept Jesus’ actions, they would have to admit Jesus was the Messiah. Would that have been so horrible? Have you ever thought what Jesus’ ministry may have looked like had he not been an “enemy” in the eyes of the religious leaders who were anxiously awaiting the Messiah?
