Read Revelation 1:4-8
God is speaking to us through John. John would have known Jesus in person for a few years of his life. Those were probably the biggest, most incredible years of John’s life. Now with all of that love for Jesus, John was given this revelation. It helps for us to put ourselves as closely to John’s contagious awestruck wonder as we can. To be given responsibility for such a precious, yet crucial message or revelation from God and the Lamb.
We see who John was initially addressing. We’ll discover more about these seven churches and how they can resemble what we see today in our local churches. In this way, Jesus’ revelation is more relevant than ever in present day.
Even though it is John’s voice we hear, much of what John says here are quotes from God. John extends the greeting of peace from God as this, “the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come; from the sevenfold Spirit before his throne; and from Jesus Christ.” God in three persons is present and sending salutation.
John responds in worship. How could you not when in the presence of God! What did John’s worship sound like? “All glory to him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by shedding his blood for us.” John was giving God all the glory. Each of us can claim an inheritance of freedom because of what Jesus did for us.
And then John sees Jesus in all his glory, just as we will all see Jesus one day. I don’t know about you, but there have been many days when I’ve looked up to the sky to see if I see the heavens opening up. What a dazzling spectacle it will be when what we read here takes place. The Bible says,
“Look! He comes with the clouds of heaven.
And everyone will see him—
even those who pierced him.
And all the nations of the world
will mourn for him.
Yes! Amen!
I’ve always thought it a bit curious that John would say, “all the nations of the world will mourn for him.” What a revival that would be. Many nations will likely mourn for themselves when they realize who Jesus Christ really is. I’m afraid many people will have their eyes opened when he arrives “with the clouds of heaven.”
As God introduces himself as the Alpha and Omega, I got a bit of a chill. I suppose I too often take God for granted, knowing that he’s there for me. When I’m reminded of his majesty, his supremeness, and his eternal nature, I feel all warm and cozy. Having that much power and might surrounding you, lifting you up, guiding you, how could you not feel energized.
We’re not told when what John saw will happen beyond this vision. We can only do our part to be ready. We have time to be listening for God’s voice. We have time to show God how much he means to us and how grateful we are. We have time to share with others the life changing impact knowing Jesus has made for us. We have time, we just can’t waste another minute. How are you spending your time?
Let’s pray. LORD, I’m guilty of not spending as much time with you as I could. Please forgive me and help me to be more focused. Connecting into your power leaves me feeling so much more energized and ready to face the day. I look forward to the day you return and don’t want to miss an opportunity to be used by you. I will be looking to you for guidance and direction. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
