Our readings continue in the longest psalm. Is it just me, or do these passages contain more plea-like language? Phrases like, “restore my life”, “sustain me”, “don’t leave me”, “show me your mercy”, “ransom me”. This is a good reminder that we never stop asking God for help and we never stop looking to his word for the answers.
The psalmist is feeling the pressure from the enemy. Yet, his belief is that the word of God and the commandments are wonderful and make him wiser than his enemies. We have that very wisdom in our hands, available to us. We need to spend more time developing a heart like the psalmist with an eagerness to learn and obey.
One of my favorite artists of all time, Amy Grant, did a song many years ago called “Thy Word” based on verse 105. I have sung it in worship on many occasions. You can listen to it here.
God’s Word truly is a lamp unto our feet. It gives us direction. When the path is dark before us, and it’s unclear which way to go, we can look to God’s word for understanding, truth and hope.
God’s word, his instruction, commandments, decrees, laws, however they are described in these sections, are described as: a source of hope, sweeter than honey, a constant guide, my treasure, my heart’s delight, wonderful, giving light, and right. Like a lighthouse gives light and warning to those on the sea, God’s word illuminates the heart of God and his message for us.
What words would you use to describe God’s word? Make a mental list or jot down a few of your thoughts. We need to cherish this beautiful gift that God has given us.
Let’s pray. Lord thank you for giving us your Word. It is your message to us and your instructions for life. When troubles surface and worry sets in, help us to remember your promises. May we reflect on your truth to set us free from the bondage of doubt. Light my path today, may I walk in your ways. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
