Proverbs 1:1-7 – Wisdom for Today

Read Proverbs 1:1-7

Proverbs will deliver truth in a meaningful way for us, sometimes challenging, but always exactly what we need to hear. People all over are looking for answers. This book of the Bible is full of wisdom to help us navigate through life. This God-inspired book deals with one hot topic after another. The authorship is ascribed to Solomon, King David’s son. He was well known for his great wisdom.

As we walk through this book together, we’ll encounter all sorts of messages. Some of these truths will strike you, and others will strike me. Feel free to share in the comments how a given reading has given you some direction. I love when we see those God moments in our lives.

These first few verses are a great summary of what to expect here. We can be confident that we will be taught wisdom. We may even hear our mother’s (or grandmother’s) voice in our head when we encounter some of these verses. They were always trying to teach us right from wrong, and many of their directions were probably inspired by the wisdom God gave Solomon. We’ll find that and so much more in the pages of this book.

Our goal should be to learn how to live disciplined and successful lives. Do you know what happens when we try to go it alone in this life? When I look back on those times in my own life, I just shake my head. What was I thinking? Do you have seasons of your life like that?

We may think we’re already pretty wise. After all, we’ve been living for a while now, we’ve seen a lot, experienced a lot, doesn’t that count for anything? Sure, life experience is huge when it comes to our education and where we find ourselves at this moment. But to think that we are finished growing is ludicrous.

The saying, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is also a mindset block that many tell themselves. The word to avoid here is “can’t.” Never limit yourself. Be ready to accept this new wisdom and let it transform your life. Let God speak to you. These words won’t be easy, so we’ll have to be listening carefully.

Are you ready to experience a tilt in your world? We certainly don’t want to be fools who despise wisdom and discipline. I’m not sure what God is going to reveal through these next days and weeks while we walk through Proverbs, but I’m open to let this wisdom make me a better a person. Ready to join me?

Let’s pray …  Father God, help me take the time I need to let the truths of your Word flow into me. Calm any fears which may lead to my resistance for growth and maturity in my faith. Help me to close out the messages of the world that attempt to blind me from the wisdom I encounter. Thank you for the gifts of wisdom and knowledge that will be revealed to me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

  1. Life is a gift that has been given to you. It is in your hands to make the best out of it–dare to believe that you can. Through the ups and downs, you’ll find a lesson to learn that will make you a better person. Each experience–good and bad–makes you grow. Get along with life and surely, things will become easier for you. Live for today and enjoy every moment. Capture the best that life has to offer you.

  2. From a young age the book of Proverbs taught me many lessons that I remember to this day. They are short and powerful messages that we can teach to our children or share with others during the day. Thanks for your insight into the wisdom of Solomon. We can learn to be disciplined and successful in our everyday lives.

    1. Thanks, Carolyn. I’m really looking forward to walking through the Book of Proverbs. Like you said, many lessons in short powerful messages! Likewise, I have done the same with the Book of Psalms. I’ve taken those posts and edited them into a book available for download or print! Super excited to share!

  3. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks is something I always find myself disagreeing with, with some exceptions (there always are, aren’t there? 😉 ). You actually can teach an old dog new tricks and, like you said, “can’t” is a word to be avoided.

The prayer you shared is very nice, I like it a lot, because it focuses on gratitude, calming fears, and not letting messages from the world blind us, which to me means not letting negativity of others block us. These are important messages to take throughout life, every day. Thank you for sharing this!

    1. Thanks for visiting the site, Christine. When we can focus on gratitude every day it can really change our focus. Be sure to stop back and visit. I may have even written an entry on your favorite Bible passage already.

  4. Proverbs truly is a book of wisdom.  It covers so many diverse topics that anyone should be able to glean something from it.  Its words of wisdom are as useful today as when it was written, so long ago.  Even non-religious people should be able to gain some insight from this wonderfully written book.

    1. Thank you for your kind words. I love how God’s word is still relevant today. We can all find ourselves in God’s story.
