Luke 15:11-32 – A Father’s Love

Read Luke 15:11-32

Jesus teaches us some very profound lessons when he uses stories like this one, called parables. This parable is one of my favorites and reflects God’s loving character so well. It’s easy to imagine the story playing out right before your eyes. If you’re an “empty-nester parent” like me, you might even find yourself identifying with the father just a little bit. It’s always a good thing when we can insert ourselves into the Bible’s narrative.

We are often like that wayward son living our lives away from our Heavenly Father. We think we’ve got it all figured out as we “do our own thing,” trying to make our way. When we finally figure out that life can be so much fuller with God, we come running back, or maybe slinking back, to see if God is still waiting for us. Psalm 91 – God Our Protector

Read Psalm 91

Don’t you love the boldness of the psalmist, sharing such a deep and reverent faith in God, the Creator? The descriptions of God in this psalm are images of a strong protector. When the world feels like it is crashing in around you, read this psalm!

As we examine God’s character from the perspective of His majesty and grace, these verses remind us of His great love and care for us. We may be disappointed by friends and family, but God is steadfast and true. He stands guard as a strong protector for us. Continue reading “Psalm 91 – God Our Protector”

Exodus 3:13-15 – Who is God?

Read Exodus 3:13-15

To fully understand this text, it’s helpful to have a bit of Moses’ backstory. Who is this man who had an audience with God, the Almighty? Moses, an Israelite by birth, had been raised surrounded by the Egyptians (the persecutors of God’s people). As an adult, God called Moses to be a great leader, facilitating God’s will. Enlisted for a mighty purpose, Moses didn’t feel qualified.

The truth that the LORD shares with Moses in this short passage is key because it is how God introduces himself. You may still be trying to figure out how you would introduce someone to the God you have found, to your Savior, Jesus. Continue reading “Exodus 3:13-15 – Who is God?”

Psalm 19:1-6 – Nature Speaks About God

Read Psalm 19:1-6

The book of Psalms contains a poetic style of writing. We can learn a lot about God from the poet’s lyrical way of describing God’s power and might. The Psalms are a good source of learning more about the character of God. As believers, we continually seek more of God.

Our life has more meaning when we understand who our Creator is. It’s golden when we understand our “roots” and realize the same God who fashioned the heavens also created us. I love how the apostle Paul puts it in Ephesians 6:10: “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” Continue reading “Psalm 19:1-6 – Nature Speaks About God”

Ephesians 1:12-14 – God’s Purpose

Read Ephesians 1:12-14

Have you ever written a “purpose statement” for your life? Many businesses and organizations start with a purpose statement to set intentions and expectations for their goals. God’s purpose for us, then, is that we will bring him glory. God intends for us to be included because we have heard and accepted the Good News.

God’s purpose for Himself is to save us and give us the Holy Spirit. That is definitely Good News! Jesus was sent on that rescue mission so we would be saved from our sins. We were never abandoned because Jesus sent the promised Holy Spirit so we would be empowered and set free. Continue reading “Ephesians 1:12-14 – God’s Purpose”
