Numbers 27:1-11 – Women’s Rights

Read Numbers 27:1-11

I appreciated the boldness of the daughters of Zelophehad. As land was being assigned, they realized they may be left out because their father had died and there was no male child left to inherit God’s provision. They rightfully acknowledged their father’s own sinfulness and would not be entering the Promised Land.

Their situation brought up a very real scenario, and I can’t imagine Zelophehad’s daughters were the only ones left in this position. Rather than act on his own, Moses went to God for the answer. Seeking God’s counsel is always the right move when presented with a new situation. God’s response may have surprised some, but what a fair way to assure these women their rights to land.

Zelophehad’s name would not be forgotten. His daughters did their part to assure that didn’t happen. In fact, their inquiry led to further instructions for situations that may also affect other Israelites with uncommon familial situations. We see God’s justice at work here. If we ever question a situation, we should approach God with faith like these women and Moses did.

Psalm 11:7 says, “For the righteous Lord loves justice. The virtuous will see his face.” Psalm 140:12 says, “But I know the Lord will help those they persecute; he will give justice to the poor.” When I think of examples of God’s justice, I can’t help but think of his care for orphans and widows. Isaiah 1:17 says, “Learn to do good. Seek justice. Help the oppressed. Defend the cause of orphans. Fight for the rights of widows.”

I am so privileged to be able to work with orphans here in Mexico at La Ola Girls’ Home. It’s a double blessing to be able to prayerfully support my widow friend who runs that very same orphanage. I can testify to how God’s love continuously pours out for these precious ones. Witnessing how God moves to protect and provide always amazes me. By sharing my faith and loving on them, I feel Jesus’ hands reaching from heaven and using me.

How are we to respond to our God-given rights as believers? Micah 6:8 says “O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what he requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” Can you do a better job of walking with God? It’s not up to us who receives God’s provision. Our job is to receive God’s grace and mercy with gratitude and humility.

colorful animation of prayer hands and hearts and flowersLet’s pray. Lord, thank you for all the blessings I see around me. I know that you care for all your children, but you have a special place for those who are oppressed and weak. I am humbled that you use me in my own weakness to bring your word to others. Continue to fill me and draw me closer to you each day. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
