Read Matthew 3:1-12
John the Baptist was an interesting fellow who took his job very seriously. Not many of us can claim that the prophet Isaiah spoke about us. John’s purpose in life was planned by God for many years. He was to prepare the way for Jesus first coming. What an honor!
Do you ever wonder who God is planning to use to prepare the way for Jesus’ second coming? You might want to look in the mirror. While we’ll find out one day if God has in mind just one individual to stand out like John did with his less than “normal” ways. For now, we can be sure God is counting on us to welcome people into his family by introduction and our loving example.
We don’t have to the “recreate the wheel” either. John gave us the perfect script. “Repent of your sins and turn to God, for the Kingdom of Heaven is near.” That’s certainly still a true statement. While Jesus ushered in the kingdom with his first coming, he will totally fulfill it in his second.
As we prepare our hearts for Christmas, it can be helpful to picture the baby in the manger and replay all of the details in our minds. But shouldn’t it also be helpful to realize that God’s plan for our salvation began long before the Holy Spirit met Mary in that special way. God’s plan was put into motion long before. As soon as sin entered the world, God knew that a rescue would be essential.
No matter how many presents are under the tree, we have been given so many gifts from God. Our faith, the Holy Spirit, our spiritual gifts, salvation, grace, and so on. The list of our abundance is without end.
Think of the story you have about your faith in this Infant King. It didn’t all start in the manger. But the manger is when God revealed himself to the world. Wrapping my head around the fact that the Creator of the universe wanted to come rescue me takes some doing. But as I reflect, more and more peace floods into my heart because I know the truth.
It is my prayer that the truth of Scripture, of Jesus, of God’s master plan will resonate with you anew this Christmas.
Let’s pray. Lord, can it be as easy as repenting? I do turn to you and look forward to when you return. Help me do my best in this world to reflect you and draw others to you. Thank you for how you have rescued us and given us your word to guide us. May your Spirit help me see your truth and declare it boldly. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
