Luke 18:31-34 – They Don’t Get It

Read Luke 18:31-34

This isn’t the first time that Jesus tells his disciples about what is going to happen to him. In this instance, he’s not referring to himself in first person which is a little odd. I wonder why he did that? Even more perplexing is that it says the significance of Jesus’ words was “hidden from” his followers.

I understand it to mean that God chose to keep the full picture of what was to come hidden or obscured from understanding. What do you think the disciples would have done if they had known the full story or understood the agony their friend would endure. Would they have tried to stop it? Would they have taken Jesus a different way so as to avoid his fate in Jerusalem?

It’s not for us to wonder, but only marvel at how God had beautifully orchestrated this. His son had come with a purpose. The Messiah is going to save the world in a way entirely different than what the people expected. The truth had to be hidden, for the time being, so that it could be fulfilled as intended. What God hides, he can then reveal.

Do you think things are being hidden from you by God? How are you handling the waiting for the big reveal? It’s kind of like a make over. We enter God’s presence dirty, broken, and selfish. When his redeeming love washes over us, we are cleansed, made whole and filled with love. It’s a beautiful thing. He desires this transformation for each of us.

We may be wandering around this life lost and alone. We may not understand God’s ways, nor should we.  God is God and we are not. His ways are better than we could ever fathom. His desire for us and intention for our benefit go beyond what we could ever plan. His main hope for us is to have a relationship with him.

He yearns for us as we yearn for him. If you are feeling alone or unsure of your life, you need more of God. If you have an emptiness inside that you can’t quite describe, that’s your longing for God. Reach out, ask God for clarity, for peace, for guidance, and he will bless you more and more. Ask him to reveal to you what he is hiding from view.

Let’s pray. Lord I don’t want to be left in the dark like the disciples here. Show me what you have for me today. Help me walk in the ways you have for me. Fill my mouth with words from you. May I honor you in all I say and do. Forgive me when I try to do it all by myself or question your ways. Bring the people into my path that you have for me to help. I love to be your servant. Thank you for the joy in my heart as I count the many blessings you have given me. For those that don’t know you, I pray the hole they have in their heart will soon be filled as they call on you to make them whole. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
