Luke 10:1-20 – Bold Witness

Read Luke 10:1-20

This is the second time Jesus sends out his disciples here in Luke. This time, however, there are more than just the twelve, and it is likely that the original twelve are not part of this new group of 72.

It is clear that there have been more than just twelve surrounding Jesus, hanging on his every word, and following him where ever he goes. It is now their turn to see the power of God at work. It is now their turn to be obedient and be God’s missionaries.

Jesus’ instructions were similar to before with a bit more detail. They were to take nothing, stay with those who welcome them, be gracious, not move around much, heal the sick, and if not welcomed, leave them to their doom! As Jesus’ circle of followers was growing, he wanted them to also grow deeper through this experience.

When we put ourselves into situations that stretch us, we grow. Jesus knew this, and for those 72 people, they experienced it. That kind of growth isn’t reserved for them alone. We, too, have been given the mission to go into the world proclaiming the truth about Jesus. We need to be real and raw with our message. We have our experiences to share. People like to hear stories of redemption, of restoration, and of rebirth.

What is stopping you from getting out there today?

One passage that struck me was the blessing one? We often we tell someone, “God bless you.” I read that if they (those receiving our blessing) are not worthy, the blessing returns to us. I’m still not sure what that means exactly. I picture a force field of sorts around them keeping blessings from getting in? I would think these are the very folks who need a blessing from God. If you’ve got insight on this, leave a note in the comments please.

We know the kingdom of God is near. With that assurance we need to be bold. We can’t let circumstances keep us from our mission. I don’t want to stand before Jesus and tell him I just couldn’t pull myself away from my favorite TV show or all of the volunteering I did at school. I was too busy to be involved with your mission for my life.

We should want more and more people to accept Jesus. That should be burning in our heart, in our DNA. To do that, we need to tell more and more people. It can’t be our little secret.

What about rejection? Jesus warns us to not take it personally if we are rejected. Jesus said, “Anyone who accepts your message is also accepting me. And anyone who rejects you is rejecting me. And anyone who rejects me is rejecting God, who sent me.” We need to get over ourselves. This mission is so much bigger than we can even fathom.

With all that set up, the 72 listened to Jesus’ command and went. They came back exhilarated because even the demons obeyed! Jesus told them, and is telling us, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you. But don’t rejoice because evil spirits obey you; rejoice because your names are registered in heaven.”

We have the power of God. Whom shall I fear? Listen to this great song by Chris Tomlin HERE.

Let’s pray. Lord you are my strength and shield protecting me from my enemies. Whom shall I fear? Nobody. Nothing. You are always by my side. Thank you for the mission. May I be a good steward with your truth. Fill me with boldness to proclaim your goodness. The Kingdom of Heaven is at hand. We all need to be ready. Use me to be your messenger. Bless all the encounters I have today. Help me to find the right openings to help others to see you. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
