1 Chronicles 16:11 – What Are You Searching For?

“Search for the Lord and for his strength; continually seek him.” (1 Chronicles 16:11)

Sometimes, we find ourselves searching for things that don’t matter. We get caught up in get-rich-quick schemes or weight loss fads, with differing levels of success. We can easily fill our days with activities that entertain but don’t do anything to draw us closer to God.

Context (1 Chronicles 16:7-36): Our short memory verse comes from a prayer of praise King David gave to his fellow Levites to worship before the Ark of the Covenant. You may recall the Ark was God’s presence among the people. This prayer is full of many beautiful images of God’s supremacy and instructions for how we should respond. Gratitude is a major theme, and to never forget all that God has done.

David’s reminder to us is not to seek God when it’s convenient for us but to do so “continually.” What does that word mean to you? It suggests we should make searching for God a constant priority. When you think about it, doesn’t it make sense that we should be seeking God and his strength for our every moment?

So why don’t we? Why do we let distractions get in the way? Why do we chase after things that don’t matter? Why do we make excuses and end up complaining because something doesn’t go our way? Don’t rush past these questions.

The Bible is full of wonderful nuggets like this. That’s one of the reasons I like to reflect on a verse at a time. Even one line from Scripture can change our perspective. I often need that redirection. David’s prayer of praise is just one example of wisdom we can glean from, with many nuggets to think about.

If you are feeling weak or unsure about something in your life, this verse is for you. If you are feeling energized and ready to conquer the world, this verse is for you. Don’t let yourself miss out on searching for God’s strength one more minute. Isn’t it time to continually be watching for God?

meditate on the Bible, praying hands over open BibleLet’s pray. Father God, I see you all around me. I see you in the sunset, in the grass sprouting in our yard, in the eyes of loved ones, in the hearts of children, and in the stars twinkling in the night sky. You are everywhere! Thank you for how you reveal yourself to me when I search for you. Forgive me for letting myself be distracted by so many things and missing out on time with you. I want to invite you into all aspects of my life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
