You never know when God is going to have a divine appointment for you to share your faith. That’s why it’s so important to keep our eyes and ears open. Be watching for openings and don’t shy away from action. In Philip’s case, he even got an angelic message of instruction about his next audience. His obedience was clear as he traveled quite some distance to get to his “target.”
In those days, many traveled on foot, but Philip’s divine appointment was with someone in a carriage. That would signify wealth or importance. In fact, this eunuch did have “great authority” and connections to the queen of Ethiopia. I wonder if Philip felt a bit intimidated.
Knowing he was on “assignment” from God, Philip listened and was happy to help bring understanding. There are plenty of people these days who have a hard time understanding the Bible, so being able to help them unlock the Spirit of Truth inside us can allow the revelations to flow. It’s always helpful when our subjects are open and eager to learn, as the eunuch was.
Philip didn’t waste this opportunity to speak about Jesus. The prophecy points to Jesus, but not everyone would be able to see the connection. The Holy Spirit clearly gave Philip everything he needed that day to open the eyes of the eunuch and bring understanding.
I’ve always found it a bit curious how this story ends so abruptly following the baptism. As if Philip’s job was done, he was whisked away. At least there would be no awkward goodbyes. At least Philip was given the clear message that his divine appointment was over. The eunuch didn’t need Philip anymore. He went on his way “rejoicing.” His time in Jerusalem had been wonderful, I’m sure, but his trip home was magnificent!
We may not get an angelic visit showing us our next divine appointment, and that’s okay. We know God can get our attention in many ways. I have had experiences when I have felt led to say something that doesn’t really make sense to me, but when I share it, it seems to be the best news ever. That could have been a divine appointment.
How many divine appointments can you remember? Maybe it was a conversation over coffee with a friend. Maybe it was smiling at a stranger that brightened their day. Our divine appointments don’t have to end in baptisms and talking about the hidden meaning in Scripture. God wants us to be ready to share with others about his love and care for his world. How and when we do that is different every time.
Our takeaway from this story should be to remain open and always listening for God’s voice. We shouldn’t close ourselves off from the world afraid of what people are going to think. We need to be prayerful about who it is God wants us to touch for him each day. Then, wait on God.
Let’s pray. Lord Jesus, thank you for each divine appointment you have given me. I love it when you use me to do your will and help others understand how much you love them. Help me to keep my eyes open and not hide behind excuses. Equip me to be used by you for your purposes. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
