Joshua 5:13-15 – Holy Ground

Read Joshua 5:13-15

Did you peek at Chapter 6 because you wanted to see how this story ended? I did. I was sure something juicy was going to happen next. Why in the world did these short verses show up to begin the transition of our story? I may have been even more surprised by the angel’s response when asked if he was friend or foe? “Neither one,” he replied. “I am the commander of the Lord’s army.”

I suppose that we’re not necessarily supposed to get chummy with our angel of protection. Joshua clearly understood that this situation necessitated a response of great respect. “At this, Joshua fell with his face to the ground in reverence.” I can picture this so vividly in my mind, can’t you?

We may remember a similar scene when God showed up in a burning bush before Moses. Read and watch from Exodus 3. That’s powerful stuff being used by God. Moses’ life totally changed in the moment he encountered God on holy ground. Now, we see Joshua, not in the presence of God himself but of the commander of the Lord’s army. That, to be sure, also made the ground holy.

What do you think of when you think of holy ground? I remember as a child playing in the church after Sunday School. We were always taught that the platform where the pulpit and altar were was holy ground. In my child-like brain, I accepted the fact because it was, after all, God’s house. This platform was just the most holy because of the cross on the wall. It’s where I imagined Jesus was.

We hear people refer to the land of Israel where Jesus walked as the “Holy Land.” Where God is present is most certainly holy. Where is God today? In Matthew 18:20, Jesus tells us, “For where two or three gather together as my followers, I am there among them.” That could include a prayer gathering, Bible study, church service, or Christian mission, to name a few.

It would seem we have likely all walked on holy ground many times in our lives. I don’t know about you, but I haven’t dropped down with my face to the ground. I may have kneeled and bowed my head though. When I do that, I always feel like I am showing a special reverence. I even feel closer to God. It’s hard to run away and get on with the busyness of the day when we’re on our knees.

If you’re having a hard time focusing on your relationship with Jesus during your quiet time, get on your knees. Use a pillow because the floor can get hard very quickly. God will see your reverent behavior. After you get past feeling a little silly at first, let me know if you don’t feel closer to God.

Holy ground. It is where God is. God is with us. Earlier in the book of Joshua, in verse 9 of chapter 1, these words are one of my favorite messages from God. “This is my command—be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid or discouraged. For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Let’s pray … Lord, I’m standing on holy ground in your presence. I can feel your love surrounding me. As I close my eyes, I imagine you beside me ready to help me conquer the challenges of the day. Help me remember to rely on you in good times and bad. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
