Read John 14:15-29

Our reading today kicks off our new theme of “The Holy Spirit & Prayer.” We hear directly from Jesus as he promises the Holy Spirit to his disciples. You can imagine those close friends were a bit perplexed about the whole notion of an Advocate like this. Little did they know as they heard these words that this would be their last meal with Jesus.

This whole passage is full of wisdom Jesus wanted to make sure he shared. We’ll be discussing this very passage as part of our Bible study with the orphanage youth group tomorrow night. I am always excited when I can encounter the same passage more than once in the same week. There is likely a very profound message for me in this text. Let’s explore it together.

First, we’re told, “If you love me, obey my commandments.” Jesus was setting his followers up for success because he knew that soon he would not be with them, guiding them, and reminding them of what good behavior looks like. We’re in the same boat all these years later. Our access to Jesus is not by rubbing shoulders with him. Yet, we can still show our love through obedience.

The Holy Spirit is our guide nowadays. The mystery remains of how it all works. Our trust in Jesus’ words allows us to trust the supernatural power we can tap into. Jesus knew we would need guidance and wisdom to navigate the treachery of this world. Many people will never understand or even attempt to accept the blessing or promise Jesus speaks of in these verses.

I believe we are loved by the Father, whether we love him back or not. The power and intensity of that love is made complete when we reciprocate and show our devotion with our obedient hearts. Jesus our Savior and friend reveals himself to us when we love him and trust him. That’s a promise we can rely on.

People who believe Christians have limited freedom for “fun” have never met Jesus. Christ-followers often comment about how easy it is to want to please God. As if a switch is flipped when we say “Yes” to Jesus, we can’t help but want to do what Jesus asks of us. The Holy Spirit’s power helps us implement and enjoy that way of life.

Being a Christian can often be scary because of all the persecution we hear about and all the jabs we get from those who don’t yet understand. Jesus is clear on this promise. Even though he is no longer physically present, he tells us, “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.” Jesus doesn’t want us to be afraid. His peace is undeniable even in the hardest situations.

Let’s be happy for Jesus like he wants. He was going back to the Father, a wonderful place to be. We can trust his promise of returning. Jesus tells us earlier in this same chapter that he is going to prepare a place for us. For now, we need to love, obey, and be ready for Jesus’ promised return.

abiding in Jesus, praying womanLet’s pray. Father, thank you for sending the Holy Spirit into my life. I love you and want to obey your commandments. Help me to understand more fully how you want me to live my life, interact with others, and shine my light for you. Thank you for the peace I feel. I am comforted and empowered by your love and look forward to the day Jesus returns. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
