Hebrews 10:26-31 – Heart Check

Read Hebrews 10:26-31

So many times we go through the motions of life. There are so many things we do on autopilot, like brushing our teeth or combing our hair. Sometimes things like this are done without giving much thought to them. You don’t even necessarily put them on your To-Do List because you just know to do them.

How often do we sin and not know it? Every day. Those sins are not “deliberate” as the author describes. I was a little frightened by these words, “if we deliberately continue sinning after we have received knowledge of the truth, there is no longer any sacrifice that will cover these sins.” That seems pretty clear and final. No sacrifice will cover those sins. After some reflection, I realized these would be the sins we do on purpose or do even though we know they are sinful. That’s a whole different story.

However, the words still sting a bit. I know it’s a sin to be lazy like a sloth, yet there are times when I am a bit of a sloth. Or, if I’m pushing through and working hard, I lament that I cannot be lazy and relax watching Netflix all day. Is that sinful?

The idea of God’s judgment or the raging fire that consumes his enemies is a bit unnerving. Thankfully, I read these words as a warning to those who are trampling on God, showing no respect for his authority, and insulting the mere idea of holiness. I would never want to be in that group of people. However, I have to wonder if my behavior has ever walked a line that would put me in that category.

So how do we help people avoid this trap of sin and desire holiness? It’s not our job. The Holy Spirit brings God’s mercy. It is God who works in our hearts to ignite the passion and reverence. Why some people can’t feel it or don’t seem to be as “holy” is because they are refusing to allow God into their hearts. For some reason, maybe ignorance, they haven’t pursued God or realized that the emptiness they are walking around with is their missing out on having a relationship with their Creator. A creator who loves them.

If I were apart from God, sinning in an intentional way, it would be “a terrible thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” But I am not apart from him, and I long for the day when I can run into his arms. Sadly, not everyone is connected or even desires the connection. They are the people we need to find. They are the ones who need to hear this message. God is in the forgiveness business – it’s up to him who ultimately joins him in paradise.

So who is holding your heart? Is your relationship with Jesus needing a bit of a reboot? He’s waiting for you. Be intentional in your choice to follow, not intentional in your sinfulness.

Let’s pray. Lord, I thank you for your great love for me. Forgive me in those times when I miss the mark and fall into the trap of sin. I know you are there to pull me out and redeem me. It is my heart’s desire to never disappoint you. I am humbled and honored to be your daughter. May everything I say and do reflect you and your love for me and others. Open the eyes and hearts to those who are far from you to be ready for your message. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
