We must believe in the deity of Jesus or our faith crumbles and is meaningless. These verses say it so beautifully. “Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.” Paul knew the Colossian believers (and us) would need to firmly grasp the supremacy of Jesus.
Paul’s first audience was surrounded by false teachers that would have been trying to sway the people to doubt Jesus was anything special. There would have even been popular thought questioning how the world could have been created by God because he would not have created evil. This text is probably the strongest in the whole Bible for the divine nature of Christ. Â

What strikes me as I reflect on this today is that despite the authority of Christ, he still desires a relationship with us. We are likely to be drifting away from the Father a bit at a time. That’s what sin does. It separates us from God. Yet Jesus came to reconcile us into God’s good graces. We are sinful by nature, but “through him God reconciled everything to himself.”
When I think of building a relationship and being friends with Jesus, one of my favorite verses is Revelation 3:20. “Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends.” Jesus is not going to barge in but asks us to open the door when we hear his voice. What a glorious image-bonding over a meal together with Jesus!
Jesus had to die on that cross for us to fulfill our destiny. “He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.” Where there is chaos, we can find peace only because of Jesus. How do we respond to this? In Colossians 3:15 we read, “And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.” Be thankful.
We don’t have to be perfect before God loves us. He knows we’re going to mess up. Romans 5:8 says, “But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”
Take some time today to reflect on the supreme nature of Jesus. How does it feel to have a friend like that?
Let’s pray. Father, I am so thankful that you revealed yourself to me in your son, Jesus. My mind can’t even comprehend your majesty and yet you thought of me. Help me to never forget what you have done for me. Empower me to share this message with others and to always have a grateful heart no matter my circumstances. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
