The movement continues. God is working through all of his believers, even those who fled after Stephen’s death. While the main focus had been to preach to Jews (more comfortable), those in Antioch were also preaching to Gentiles (more outside the box). God was moving in everyone who heard, not just the Jews. What’s striking is that although these believers had fled in fear, they were boldly spreading the Good News. We should never let our circumstance be an excuse to hold us back from sharing our faith.
As a bit of background, the city of Antioch was prominent, third only to Alexandria and Rome in the Roman Empire. It was an immoral city. Yet, it is where we were first called “Christians.” The “ian” suffix means “belonging to” or “of the part of”. I love that. We belong to Christ. We are of the part of Christ. Antioch is where Saul began his vital preaching of the new life in Christ.
The communication lines between believers was alive and well. The community was growing, despite them being scattered. Yet, they were connected. We hear again of Barnabas coming to the rescue of those in Antioch. He was such an encourager. He took one look at the situation and knew the perfect solution would be to bring Saul on board. Who better than Saul, one with intellectual training, Roman citizenship, and spiritual power, to resonate with the people of Antioch.
Saul and Barnabas formed a ministry team at that point. They had their work cut out for them, but when God is in control, marvelous things happen. We hear they spent a year in Antioch preaching and teaching. These converts became a strong and thriving church.
We need to relinquish our need to be in control so we, too, can experience the power of God. It can be difficult. We have been taught since childhood to “be strong,” “keep up the good work,” “don’t cry over spilled milk,” etc. These behaviors are all under our own power. Yes, it’s good to be strong and do good, but we need to rely on the power of God. There is so much more we can accomplish if we only let go and let God.
Let’s pray. Lord, forgive me for times I forge ahead without waiting for you. I want you to lead me. I need your power and wisdom for each new day. I want to be totally obedient to you and what you want for me. I thank you for the path you have placed me on. It is a great adventure. I see a new beauty each day and feel a closeness to you I’ve never known before. I pray for those who don’t have this same level of trust. I pray your joy will be full in their lives. Use me where you see fit today, Lord. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
